From Afton to Marine, the ridgelines above the St. Croix do something in October that is hard to overstate. Red. Orange. Gold. Reflected in the river below.

It is right outside the door for everyone in this Valley. Worth actually stopping to look at it.

We did not talk much. Did not need to. She had her headphones in before we hit the highway.

When I pulled up to the terminal she said — without looking up — "thank you for not making me talk."

That one stayed with me.
