We attended the Adirondack Association of Towns and Villages (AATV) Spring meeting in Lake Placid. Battery energy storage, an update from The Adirondack Rail Trail on the newly completed rail trail, legislative highlights, and the EMS/fire department crisis were the key topics we heard about. Our biggest take away: our local towns need the support of private landowners. We need to listen, learn, and take action where we can.

Hemlock woolly adelgid is spreading — and researchers are racing to find solutions. One promising tool? Silviculture, the science of caring for forests by strategically managing light and growth.

Studies from the southern Appalachians to New Hampshire show that hemlocks given more sunlight are photosynthesizing better, storing more carbon, and better tolerating infestations. For private landowners in the Adirondacks, this research could offer new ways to protect these iconic trees.

As one U.S. Forest Service researcher put it: "We can continue to do nothing, but we're going to watch trees die."

Have you heard about Round Goby? This invasive fish has the potential to take over lakes and streams — and while it hasn't been confirmed within the Adirondacks yet, recent data from iMap Invasives shows it appearing around the perimeters of the Park.

If you're a landowner in the western or northwestern Adirondacks, your property may be close to areas where Round Goby have been spotted. Stay informed and know what to look for!

Questions? The Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program (APIPP) is always available to help with identification and next steps.

NOTE: If you receive a "sign in" message, click cancel to continue. Confirmed observations of Round goby submitted to the NYS Invasive Species Database. For more information, visit iMapInvasives

Our Members Are Making Waves in Adirondack Climate Science

Some of our ALA members are participating in SCALE — the Survey of Climate Change in Adirondack Lake Ecosystems — a major new collaborative research initiative launching across the Adirondacks. Much like the landmark Adirondack Lakes Survey of the 1980s responded to the acid rain crisis, SCALE is rising to meet today's challenge: understanding how climate change is reshaping our lakes and waterways. Researchers from AsRA, Cornell, RPI, CUNY, and Syracuse University are joining forces to establish a new ecological baseline that will inform conservation for generations to come.

Beginning in the spring of 2023, multiple research partners are coming together to focus their skills and talent to document and understand the impacts of climate change on freshwater ecosystems. Over the next 18 months, AsRA will participate in the pilot program for the research-consortium based Su...

🐟 Panelist Feature | ALA's Living Landscape Conference
Meet our panelists! Connor Reeve, Postdoctoral Research Associate at Cornell University and the Adirondack Fishery Research Program, will be joining us at this year's Living Landscape Conference this May.

Connor's research combines field studies, laboratory experiments, and modeling to understand how freshwater fish respond to changing environmental conditions — with a focus on applying that work to real-world fisheries management and conservation.

🌳 Panelist Feature | ALA's Living Landscape Conference
Meet one of our panelists! Sara Hart, Project Assistant in the Forest Preserve Program at the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, will be joining us at this year's Living Landscape Conference this May.

Sara coordinates a five-year old growth forest study exploring the characteristics of these rare ecosystems in the Forest Preserve — investigating above and below-ground carbon storage and estimating how much old-growth forest may still exist across New York State.
