===== 4 Tips when Moving with Pets =====
(1) KEEP IT NORMAL
Do not forget about your pet’s routine just because you are moving. If they have a walk every morning at 8am, make sure they get it. If you have to employ or get a volunteer to walk them, then do it. Similarly, keep mealtimes and playtime at the same time and in the same spot in your new home. If everything seems as normal as it can be, your pet will deal with the move better.
(2) KEEP IT QUIET
With everything in boxes and complete chaos in your home, your pet could be feeling very stressed. Putting them in a quiet spot as everything is getting moved around will be the best for them.
Use a bedroom that has already been emptied to keep your pets in a calm and quiet space. Bathrooms are also a great idea for pets who won’t feel too contained, and you can let your movers know that room is off limits so you avoid them accidentally letting your pet out.
(3) KEEP THEM SAFE
The last thing you want on moving day is to have one of your pets bolt out the door, especially in a new area that they don’t know or in your old residence where you will no longer be. If at all possible, get someone to take care of them during the move so there is no risk of them getting out the door while the furniture and boxes are being moved out.
(4) KEEP PREPARED
Get an overnight kit ready for your pet so you don’t spend hours looking in boxes for their food, bedding or bathroom accessories (litter box or p**p bags!) Put it in with your overnight bag and also include any special toys or medications that they might need to help deal with the stress.
The first night might be a difficult one after you move and you may find your pet doesn’t settle right away in your new home. They may pace, cry and take up a hunger strike. Over time, they will get used to their new environment.
