All of this!
Hi Downtown Bikers, there is now a bike corral in a no-parking zone at Main and Callendar that can accommodate more bikes while freeing up sidewalk space.
🚴♀️
For every bike, there's one less car taking up a parking space and contributing to traffic so drivers should be extra happy to see folks biking downtown. 😉
A few questions answered:
🚴♀️
? Why the Park High/Mardi Gras colors? Plain black would get too hot so the Public Works Department got creative!
🚴♀️
? Will this be up during the winter? No! They will be taken down in the Fall and put up again in the Spring when there is more bike traffic.
🚴♀️
? Is this the only one? No, there will be 3-4 in the future also in no parking zones, so not only do they not take up parking spots, every biker means no vehicle in a parking spot!
🚴♀️
? Can we ride bikes on the sidewalk? No, bikes should be ridden in lanes like vehicles, including using hand signals for turning. This increases visibility to drivers and is actually safer for all than biking on sidewalks. Please dismount when you arrive near your destination and walk your wheels to a bike corral or bike rack. It is against City ordinance to ride anything with wheels further than 2 feet apart on any sidewalk, but is especially dangerous on Downtown sidewalks where there is more pedestrian traffic. There have been increasing near collisions with pedestrians and bikers on Downtown sidewalks. If you must ride on the sidewalk, please yield to pedestrians!

This low-cost bike corral solution is courtesy of the City of Livingston, Public Works Department, the folks who keep our town clean, functional and flowing (as in water and waste disposal.) Please thank a hardworking City worker next time you see them. Their work is largely taken for granted but everything would come to a screeching halt without them!

Livingston ordinance 9-20: "It shall be unlawful for any person to place, use, or run any bicycle, or vehicle of any description, the wheels of which are over two (2) feet apart in width, upon any sidewalk in the City."
