A customer dropped off 1 of his 2004 Honda BF150’s for a diagnosis. Said it started running rough and the engine oil is milky.. I started by pulling the spark plugs, top 2 looked good, bottom 2 have signs of water in the cylinders. Milky oil and water in the cylinders usually points to a corroded exhaust port rather than a head gasket or oil cooler issue, so the next step was to pull the exhaust manifold and see what the exhaust ports on the head looked like. #1 & 2 ports look good #3 has some corrosion but no visible holes #4 has severe corrosion and a hole that I can stick a finger through into the water passages😱. With a hole that size it’s probably had water intrusion for some time and there’s already rust on a few of the cam lobes, so it’s possible that there’s also damage to the rod and crank bearings if it’s been run for long with watered down oil.. I’ll let the customer know what I found a see how he wants to proceed with this one.

Another old Evinrude that I finished up this week.. carb rebuild, new fuel pump, new thermostat, new spark plugs, new starter solenoid, tested temp sensor and alarm to confirm it’s working properly, new water pump, resealed lower unit and refilled it with fresh gear oil. A couple carb adjustments and all’s good

Finished up this 1988 Johnson 9.9 today. It was sitting unused for several years.. after a carb rebuild, replacing the cam follower roller, throttle cable end, spark plugs, rebuilt the fuel pump, changed out all the fuel lines, pulled the flywheel and replaced the timer due to no spark, pulled the thermostat and tested it,dropped the lower unit and replaced the water pump, pressure/vacuum tested for any leaks, refilled it with fresh gear oil and got everything reassembled. Put it in a barrel, started it up, adjusted air/fuel mixture and idle speed and it’s ready to go!

Another old 1974 Evinrude brought back from the dead.. did a complete service on this one, rebuilt all 3 carbs, new fuel pump, new starter, new rectifier, 2 new coils, 3 new spark plugs, new powerpack, new water pump, pressure/vacuum tested lower unit, and fresh gear oil. It now starts right up and purrs like new

Brought this old 1986 Evinrude 225 back to life.. full service including 6 new spark plugs, rebuilt all 6 carbs, changed out a few fuel and water lines that were hard and brittle, replaced some old rotten wiring and grounds, re epoxied all the magnets in the flywheel that had come loose, changed out both powerpacks, gave it a new water pump and lower unit oil and pressure/vacuum tested the lower unit seals while I had it off.. over 40 years old and it now starts right up and runs like new again!

18hp hangkai. Customer said it’s been sitting a while and it won’t start. Primed it with fuel and it was leaking pretty bad from a crack in the fuel filter, changed out the filter with a Yamaha filter. Primed it up again, no leaks, started on the 3rd pull.. it was idling pretty good but when you give it throttle the rpms would hang up pretty high and slowly drop back down to idle. Pulled the carb to make sure everything was clean and inspected the reed valves while I had the carb off. 1 reed valve was broken and a couple others weren’t sealing. Swapped the entire reed cage out with an oem Yamaha 15 reed cage and put everything back together. Started it up, tuned the mixture screw and it’s running great.

1999 Johnson 50 that a customer brought in for a service/carb clean.. removed and soda blasted then ultrasonic cleaned both carbs, pulled the lower unit, changed the impeller, drained the oil which had some water in it so I pressure tested the case to find where it got in.. found a little leak around the oil level screw so I replaced that seal then it was good to go, refilled it with fresh gear oil.. reinstalled the carbs and lower unit, synchronized the carbs, put a new set of spark plugs in it, fired it up and made a few carb adjustments and set the idle in gear speed to 800rpms. It’s running great and ready to go fishing!
