MIG Welding at Southfork

MIG stands for Metal Inert Gas welding and is one of the primary welding processes we use to build Southfork boats.

MIG welding allows our welders to make strong, consistent welds efficiently, making it especially well-suited for the longer welds and production work involved in building aluminum boats.

Compared with TIG, MIG welding generally allows us to move faster and put less concentrated heat into the surrounding aluminum, helping us maintain efficiency while keeping heat distortion under control.

At Southfork, we use the welding process that best fits the job — because building a quality aluminum boat isn’t just about welding. It’s about knowing when and how to use the right process.

SOUTHFORK WELDING 101: TIG

TIG stands for Tungsten Inert Gas welding.

TIG welding allows us to put more heat into the aluminum hull than MIG welding, while giving the welder precise control over the heat and filler material.

We use TIG in areas where that additional heat and control are beneficial, including certain hull seams, corners, and joints.

Different welding processes have different characteristics. At Southfork, we choose the process based on the material, joint, and application.

100+° heat. Long days. Still 110% effort.

While most people are looking for somewhere cool, our guys are in the shop building boats from the ground up.

No complaining. No excuses. They show up first thing in the morning and give it everything they’ve got until the job is done.

We’ll keep the cold drinks, snacks, and frozen treats coming, but the truth is, no amount of any of it can repay what these guys bring to Southfork every single day.

You can’t put a price on that kind of work ethic.
