Hey mommies! Do you know if your tiny human is having sleep regression or teething?

Being a newborn care specialist, postpartum doula, sleep conditioner and sleep trainer I’ve seen just about everything!

Here are my tips for helping your baby during a regression:

1. Pay attention to changing sleep needs.

As babies get older, their wake windows change (They may even be ready to drop a nap!). Make sure that your little one has appropriate wake windows for their age. This will help them have enough sleep pressure - not too much and not too little - to fall asleep and stay asleep.

2. Practice new skills during awake time.

Practice new skills during the day and working on new physical and cognitive skills during awake times.

3. Plan for active awake time.

Babies and toddlers need active awake time so fill their wake windows.

4. Keep bedtime in the sweet spot.

Most babies and toddlers do best with a bedtime between 7:00-8:00 pm. This time is typically when little ones fall asleep the easiest and stay asleep the longest.

5. Understand the changes happening in your tiny human brain.

Sleep regressions are a result of developmental progressions. Understanding what is happening developmentally for your baby will help you support them during awake time, which will make sleep easier.

6. Maintain healthy sleep habits.

Consistency is the KEY sleep helps to move through a sleep regression more quickly and sleep regressions can last 1-2 weeks.

7. Start with a great little sleeper.

If you’re struggling with your child’s sleep, I Love What I Doula can help even if you have a newborn, infant, or toddler, my years of experience will help you create a holistic plan to achieve more consistent and restful sleep for everyone in your family, even during regressions.

Do you know the safe sleeping guidelines for your tiny human?

This is one very important subject that I make sure my families understand the importance of safe sleep.

As a newborn care specialist and sleep trainer I always instill into my clients I’m blessed to assist, how important and serious this issue is.

These are ABCs of Safe Sleep:

Tiny humans should sleep
“Alone” on their “Back” inside a safe crib where all dangers eliminated by all means.

Things that you should NEVER have in their sleeping area:

no pillows, no blankets, no bumper pads, no toys, no clutter, no cords, no smoking ever!

Always giving your tiny humans a safe place to sleep could save their life.

Let’s go over a Safe Sleep Checklist:

Always place your tiny human to sleep on their backs.

Note: Side and tummy positions are not safe unless recommended by a physician.

Always put your tiny human to sleep in an empty crib that is safely approved, bassinet, or another safety approved sleeping place.

Your mattress should be fit, firm comfy, safe and snuggly in the crib.

Always make sure you cover the mattress with only a tight-fitting crib sheet.

Babies should always have their own safe sleep space, near a parent or caregiver’s bed in order to keep them safe and make breastfeeding easier.

And this is what is known as room sharing and bed sharing is NEVER safe for tiny humans.

Falling asleep with a baby on a couch , on a bed, on a couch, arm chair, or futon is very unsafe and dangerous.

Don’t ever put anything soft, loose, or fluffy in their sleep area.

This includes pillows, blankets, comforters, crib bumpers, toys, or other soft items.

One part of my job I love, is to make sure any and everyone who cares for their tiny human are educated on how to safely put them to sleep.
