❄️ In January 1917, a line of women walked up to the White House gates and simply stood there. Silent. Every day. For more than two years.

They were called the Silent Sentinels, organized by Alice Paul and the National Woman’s Party. Beginning on January 10, 1917, they picketed outside the White House six days a week, holding banners that questioned how President Wilson could fight for democracy abroad while denying it to women at home. Around 2,000 women took part over time, through snow, rain, and summer heat. 💜

As America entered World War I, crowds turned hostile. Women were attacked, arrested on charges like “obstructing traffic,” and sent to jails and workhouses where many faced brutal treatment. News of their suffering shifted public opinion, and in 1918 Wilson finally declared his support for women’s suffrage. 🗳️ The ballot so many of us take for granted was won by women who stood freezing at a fence and refused to leave.
