We’ve flown to Disney and driven (the 13-hour!!) drive quite a few times. To be honest, I like both. Flying is obviously much easier, but there’s something nice about a family road trip that’s broken up with fun stuff along the way. I feel like lessons are learned about waiting, and we have time to leave stress behind us as we listen to audiobooks together or belt out the lyrics to songs.

I could romanticize it more, but let’s be honest: it’s also challenging with kids.

I won’t pretend to have hacked the system, and this one thing makes your road trip magical. But! I will share that last year, when we drove 17 ½ hours to CO, one of the main memories my kids talk about is the time in the car together. Every so often, I got a small gift like a book, or a crocheting, or something that would interest them.

The only thing is I didn’t want to leave it up to me on the day of for when they get to watch a movie next or when the day’s gift is coming. I don’t want to be nagged. I created a visual timeline that, all things considered, is pretty helpful, especially with different ages.

Here's a picture from one of our favorite trips that we could have easily not taken.

We were visiting good friends out of town and decided at the last minute to spend a day away together as a family in Waco.

We picked a hotel, packed a bag, and went.

Looking back, I don’t remember much about the hotel.

I remember the laughter.

I remember how easy everything felt.

I remember watching the kids have fun.

I remember a hilarious and awkward encounter I had with a stranger that Bill and I still laugh about.

Somewhere between the routines, responsibilities, and never-ending to-do lists, we’d forgotten how much we enjoy being together.

That’s the thing about travel.

Sometimes the destination matters.

Sometimes it’s Disney.

Sometimes it’s a cruise.

And sometimes it’s just getting out of your normal environment long enough to reconnect with the people you love most and want to be with!

Years later, it’s still one of our favorite trips.

Not because it was extravagant.

Because it felt a little bit magical.

Every family vacation starts with a decision.

And if you’re anything like me, you’ll spend way too much time wondering if you’re making the right one.

I’ve found that the best trips aren’t necessarily the most expensive or the most packed with activities.

They’re the ones that fit your family well.

The ones where everyone can relax, connect, and enjoy being together.

The memories usually happen in the spaces we didn’t plan.

As a homeschool mama, this immediatley caught my eye.
Not because I'm booking a 23-night cruise across the Pacific (yet haha).

It caught my eye because homeschooling has changed the way I think about education.

The world becomes a little more interesting when your kids connect what they're learning to a real place, a real person, or a real experience.

None of my kids' favorite lessons happened around the kitchen table or at their desks.

They've happened in community and with new experiences.

That's one of the reasons I love Cedar Travel. I mean, what an awesome opportunity.

Obviously, travel is fun.

But it's also one of the best teachers I know.

Planning a multigenerational trip is one of the hardest logistics problems a family faces.

You have a 6-year-old who needs structure.
A 14-year-old who needs independence.
A grandparent who needs easy days.

Most vacations force someone to compromise the whole time.

Cruise solves this in a way almost nothing else does.
The 6-year-old has a kids club. The teenager has enough space to feel like an adult. Grandma has a sea day with a chair and a view and zero obligations.

Same trip. Everyone wins.

For Father's Day, I keep thinking about this:

One minute your kid is five years old carrying around Tow Mater cars everywhere.

The next, you're standing in Cars Land with a kid who's suddenly taller, older, and asking different questions than they used to.

That's the thing about parenting.

The days can feel long, but somehow the years keep picking up speed.

Maybe that's why I love helping families plan trips.

Not because of the destination.

Because every now and then, a moment sneaks up on you and reminds you just how good this stage of life really is.

If Disneyland is a fit for your family, there are currently resort hotel savings available through September 7.

And if you're lucky, somewhere between the churros and Radiator Springs, you'll get one of those moments too.

I am biased (I am a travel agent after all) but I think the memories are the gift that sticks around.
