Hello friends! We would like to address something that’s been weighing heavy on our minds lately. As a local small business owner and family man, we are typically not outspoken about many things including the use of AI, but my three little girls have been talking about it and how detrimental it is to the environment. While we acknowledge that some AI models can be used to contribute to science we in good conscience, cannot support Generative AI. I pride myself on editing all of my laser engravings and completing large custom built pieces without the use of AI. As a survivor of the Redwood Complex Fire (2017) and growing up in California my whole life, I know the value of our natural resources like water. So when I see Generative AI used for menus, craft fairs, garage sales, logos or just the latest selfie trend, it is upsetting because I think of the amount of water being wasted that we cannot spare. There have been events that we have said opted out of because the promoters used AI. Unfortunately I know in order to create it takes time. I get it, I have a full time job and do my woodworking business on the side. I also have three daughters active in multiple sports and activities so I do not have much time but I refuse to use AI to create something I am capable of doing. There are so many wonderful artists in this community that love to support local businesses and we should support them too. Please consider taking the time to use your wonderful brain and limit the strain on our limited natural resources.
