The Most Qualified SOF Helicopter Team For The Fewest Dollars
The argument is for this platform to be adopted by any organization that requires upgrade of existing H-1 platforms, or to embrace a new maintenance and logistic support model of having over 80% of their logistical support for both medium attack and utility helicopters to be common. If you already operate H-1 platforms these new models will look very familiar, and have four rotors instead of two, new more capable/durable/efficient engines, and modern systems that can employ every NATO weapon appropriate for the platform. These upgrades increase performance tremendously and reduce logistical support cost through commonality between the two platforms while performing disparate mission sets. The blades readily fold without a huge fold and unfold effort. Both platforms can be folded and placed below deck, in a hangar or tunnel, broke out and unfolded quickly on deck or the helo-spot, and be utilized in short order. These H-1 helos are Special Operations qualified, and the UH-1Y Venom Helicopter is able to employ unguided or guided rockets like APKWS.
Both the AH-1Z Viper and UH-1 Venom have seen combat employed by the United States Marine Corps, and proved their mettle. If a country, or several neighboring countries, were to go into a cooperative agreement to employ this Deadly Duo, the logistical support savings would be considerable, shared by all with mutual support agreements put in place. The high efficiency engines provide greater speed, range, efficiency including improved hot/high performance when fully loaded. The new glass cockpits provide some of the highest quality engagement capability that exist in attack and utility helicopters, and the AH-1Z Viper Attack Helo supports all appropriate NATO weapons including the AIM-9 Air-to-Air Missile, employs a helmet pointing engagement system, and night vision equipment. For a nation that needs new medium SOF qualified attack and utility helicopters, it would be very hard to beat this combination, particularly for multiple operators in a region that are able to provide mutual support.
