Borealis needs new coaches!
We want 21st-century equipment: 400 seat trains, ADA-compliant, bike-friendly, WiFi.
And, yes, we obviously want to keep a spacious, comfortable experience.
Tell your state legislators in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois.

States are responsible for obtaining equipment on state supported routes.
In the old days, Amtrak had surplus equipment available.
In the old days, the federal government might offer a grant.
Those days are gone.

Borealis needs new equipment.
State legislatures must together budget for that purchase.

The Second Anniversary of the Borealis allows us to celebrate the immense positives this train has shown us. In general, Wisconsin residents will ride intercity passenger rail. Is this debatable anymore? But we can't be naive to the headwinds facing the Borealis or looking farther down the track getting a train for the Hiawatha West. This newsletter debuted for our Advocacy Day at the State Capital back in February. It's three months old, but the discussions are still relevant today.

Borealis is just getting started.
The demand clearly exists for more capacity and more service.
There's room to improve the amenities and the experience.
There are opportunities to increase revenue and decrease costs.

MN and WI state legislators: Don't wait for slow, cumbersome federal grants. Your DOTs know what to do. Resource them and get these improvements started.

Did you know?
Borealis is still under construction.

CPKC generously let the service begin in 2024 before over $50 million in capital improvements were completed. Some of those improvements won't happen until 2028. The improvements will increase speeds and capacity around junctions in La Crosse, La Crescent, and Winona.

Without that support from CPKC, we would still be waiting for the service to begin...instead of getting ready to celebrate Borealis' second anniversary on May 21.

Got your party hat?
We're going to celebrate.
