The Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp is a highly regarded American radial aircraft engine The R-2800 played a vital role during and after World War II, powering numerous key American aircraft and earning a reputation for its reliability and power. It featured 18 cylinders arranged in two rows and air-cooled for optimal performance. With a displacement of 2,800 cubic inches (46 liters), it is a member of the long-lasting Wasp engine family.

"Soft Start" relief for your airplane from starter wear.

We're proud to announce that today we received (NORSEE) production approval for our "Soft Start" System for certified aircraft. The purpose of the Soft Start system is to reduce starter and starter drive system wear by momentarily buffering the initial voltage spike on the start circuit. By means of an electronically timed semiconductor device, starting torque is gently applied without harmful shock loading on the mechanical components of the starter and engine gears.

Performance

The chart below illustrates the power (torque) transfer on a timeline. The black curve illustrates operation of the existing system without soft start. The green curve illustrates operation of the system with soft start, The limit torque (threshold where damage can occur) is never exceeded when soft start is used.

The system requires no pilot interaction beyond normal starter operation. NORSEE approval allows the system to be installed as a minor alteration on Aircraft Certified under 14 CFR Part 23 or precursor regulations, as outlined in FAA memorandum number PS-AIR-21.8-1602.
