Seven tips to help you prepare for your move!

1. Make a plan — If you have a moving date in mind, you can plan workdays to get the job done without exhausting yourself. Set a goal for each day. Involve family and friends early so they can plan time to participate in the process.

2. Start early — Give yourself time to create a plan. Start months ahead of moving day and sort one room at a time, beginning with the rooms you use the least.

3. Keep sorting sessions short — Plan approximately 2 hours at a time and start with the simplest room first. Starting this way will give you encouragement to continue.

4. Decide what items and why they are important to you — Is it necessary? Is there sentimental value? Is it of significant financial value? Could a family member or friend use it or want it?

5. Sort items into one of 5 categories – Keep it, gift it, donate it, sell it or throw it away.

6. Digitize photos and important documents — Consider hiring a company to digitize photos, and collections that you won’t have space for in your new home. You can also have copies made to give to family members.
