Flight delayed at EWR or PHL?
Reach out early—and often.
With ground delays and ground stops affecting our local airports, PHL and EWR remain the greatest concerns. More than 1,000 flights at Newark have reportedly been delayed or canceled, while hundreds more have been affected at Philadelphia.
Even after the equipment is restored, delays and cancellations may continue into tonight as airlines work to reposition aircraft and crews.
* Breathe. Travel disruptions are frustrating, but staying calm will help you make better decisions.
* Stay in contact with your airline. Monitor its website or app, speak with a representative at the gate, and use third-party flight-tracking apps.
* Research your alternatives. Cast a wide net and get creative. Check whether other regional airports—including Wilmington, Lehigh Valley, Atlantic City, Harrisburg and Trenton—offer workable options.
* Consider ground transportation. Having so many transportation choices is one of the advantages of living where we do. Uber and Lyft can really shine in situations like this, but check both platforms and watch for surge pricing.
The number of local and regional car services is another reason to appreciate living in the Philly area. Larger limousine operators may have the availability, vehicles and drivers needed to save the day. These services can be expensive, but when flights are disrupted and options are disappearing, getting home—or to another airport—may be worth the cost. With the smaller outfits, word of mouth and personal experience can go a long way when you need a driver. One should still do their own research, no matter the glowing reviews, ask about insurance coverage, driver vetting and appropriate licensing where required.
