We've always been Birkenstocks brand fans, and being part of a collab that explores themes of imagination, transformation, and permanence feels right. See them for the x launch through this weekend

We think about trees as our teachers, and there could be no better model for community -- resilience through diversity and deeply connected through invisible, intertwined roots.

For pride month, I turn to nature as muse, mentor, and mother/father/brother/sister, and thank them for the q***rness I find everywhere, from the eastern hemlock with both male and female cones to the kingdom of fungi that has thousands of genders. Queerness is no deviation from nature, it IS nature!

These silent lessons welcomed a non-dual expansiveness that both saved and nurtured me into who I am today -- a proud, passionate, q***r man that understands the fiercely persistent love that is required for life to evolve, to exist, to continue exploring and finding answers to what it means to embrace our depths.

Diversity isn't just beautiful. It's how we weather changes, grow through challenges, find meaning, and stretch our capacity to love. No matter what.

Happy Pride. 🏳️‍🌈

Beyond our in-store bonsai classes, we also offer off-site workshops. These are a great way to team build, foster community, and meet others in your building who share an interest in the natural world. This work is most rewarding when we share it with others. Earlier this week, students began their bonsai journey with dwarf pomegranate trees and Kyoto serissas.

Class schedules are available on our website. Send us an email to book a private group workshop.

Schedule a yearly plant spa for your bonsai tree! Soil loss and nutrient depletion occur after 12 months. Our team will assess the health of your tree to ensure it thrives.
We also recommend a repot every three years. This Brazilian rain tree revieved both. Examination found it was root bound and overgrown. After a trim, repot, style, soil refresh, and fertilization, it is ready to flourish this spring.

New: Dragon Planter
Created in collaboration with Tatsubon Pottery

Tatsubon was started by Tatsuya Kato, a third generation potter living in the pottery village of Seto City, Japan. During the Edo period, this town was famous for providing works to the Emperor’s family and for pioneering specific glazes and techniques bearing the namesake of the village.

To create the negative impression, Kato-san hand carves the original design into a mold, usually wood or plaster. Then, a layer of clay is gently pressed onto the mold.

Once the clay slightly sets, it’s carefully peeled off and transferred onto the planter surface before firing. Both clay thickness and timing is crucial to avoid cracks in the pattern, especially on the corner of the pot.

The Dragon Planter is not only a vessel for bonsai, but a rare continuation of centuries-old Seto tradition brought to life by the hands of a true master.

Dandy Farmer has been feeling dragon energy lately! Available online and in-store. 🐉

Removing a branch from a 60 year old bonsai can be scary! This Willow Leaf Ficus Forest was originally grown by John Naka. We have named her 'Nene.' Nene has been in our care for many years, but thanks to a robust growing season, she is in dire need of some attention.

First the branch is swathed in a white cloth like a bedsheet ghost costume. 👻 This is a trick to help visualize the tree without the branch. Then comes a swift sawing and the limb is lobbed off. To prevent disease the wound is sealed with bonsai putty.

When days are long, indoor tropical bonsais grow more consistently. In Summer, we selectively prune them for shape, regeneration, and to keep leaves small.

💡Remember to always use sharp bonsai scissors.

1️⃣Clean up the tree's overall silhouette. Remove any dead branches, leaves, or old spurs to keep your bonsai neat and healthy.

2️⃣To maintain the tree's overall shape: snip off the end of any vigorously growing shoot tips. This stops elongation and redirects energy to the tree trunk.

3️⃣To promote dense growth and limit twiggy-ness: let shoots grow out to 5-6 leaves before cutting them back to one or two leaves. Not only will a new shoot grow from the node, but many buds will form at the base of the shoot.

💡Pruning induces dormant buds and encourages fine, lush ramification.

Have you pruned your bonsai this season? If not, what's holding you back?
