Avasara

Avasara Avasara is CUNY’s new Human Rights Club. Our focus is on education, advocacy, and fundraising to stop human trafficking locally, in NYC, and globally.

Avasara, which means "opportunity" in Hindi, is CUNY’s new Human Rights Club. Avasara is committed to raising awareness on issues that happen not only on the other side of the globe, but right here in NYC. Human trafficking, defined as anyone being forced to work either in hard labor or in a position where they would profit financially from sex, is a worldwide issue, not only something you hear ab

out happening in a country thousands of miles away. It is the world's fastest growing criminal industry, and has made it's way to our backyard. Although women are the most at risk group, anyone can be a victim; men, women, and especially children. JFK airport, an airport you probably associate with fun families vacations and long check in lines, is among the top five airports in the world where trafficking victims enter the country. Nationwide, human trafficking victims can be forced to work as prostitutes, in agriculture, or, like many in NYC, in nail salons or massage parlors. Our goal is educate you on not only the global scale of human trafficking, but how to recognize it happening in your neighborhood. We look forward to seeing you at our events and hope to see you get involved.

Thank you to everyone who came to our event on Tuesday! It was a huge success! We heard from our panelists about how a long process of victimization leads youth to be homeless, and become very at-risk for s*xual exploitation and human trafficking. It was a somber, but inspiring evening.

Avasara is a huge fan of Guria, an anti-human trafficking organization in India. Help make their job easier by signing this petition to help end police corruption.

BREAKING NEWS: Guria just submitted over TWO THOUSAND pages of evidence documenting police misconduct in 100 cases of S*x Trafficking, Child Prostitution, and R**e!

A Times of India article was published about it here: http://goo.gl/UcGSkv

And, JOIN GURIA IN DEMANDING THIS POLICE MISCONDUCT END! SIGN OUR PETITION! >> http://goo.gl/c9RvrO

This February, Guria released the original report revealing this misconduct, and the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh ordered an inquiry into the matter. We spent months assembling all the official evidence before submitting the 2000+ pages last week!

Here is a link to our original report http://goo.gl/tAqz9G, and here is the original article the Times of India posted about it. http://goo.gl/gfoUQ4
