“But we’re never going to be in the room…”

If I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard this. 😉

I took this photo during my stay at Vita Parc in Portugal’s Algarve last year, and it perfectly illustrates why my answer is usually: the hotel is about so much more than the room.

When I recommend a hotel, I’m thinking about where you’ll wake up. Where you’ll have that first coffee in the morning. Whether you can walk out the door and be exactly where you want to be. The pool you unexpectedly spend an afternoon beside. The terrace where one drink turns into two because the view is just that good.

I’m thinking about the concierge who somehow finds the dinner reservation you couldn’t get. The staff who remembers your name. The welcome waiting when you arrive.

And that feeling when you come back after a day of exploring and think, Ahhh…we’re home.

Do I think you need to stay at the most expensive hotel everywhere you go? Absolutely not.

But I do think the right hotel can completely change the way you experience a destination. Yes.

And sometimes, the hotel itself is part of the experience...which is exactly why I’ll intentionally leave space in an itinerary for you to actually enjoy it.

Maybe that’s why I’m a little obsessed with hotels.

Okay…maybe more than a little. 😉

We all have a “someday” trip.

Someday we’ll go to Italy.
Someday we’ll take the kids to Africa.
Someday we’ll spend two weeks in Greece.

Someday we’ll finally take that big anniversary trip.

The funny thing about someday?

It isn’t actually on the calendar.

There will always be work schedules, school calendars, budgets, family commitments and a dozen perfectly reasonable reasons why this isn’t the year.

And I’m certainly not suggesting throwing practicality out the window. A great trip should be planned thoughtfully and sometimes waiting really does make sense.

But if there’s a place you’ve been talking about for years, maybe the first step isn’t booking the flight.

Maybe it’s simply deciding:

When?

Give the dream a year. A season. A place on the calendar.

Because once “someday” becomes next October, something wonderful happens.

You start planning.

And suddenly, you’re going.
