This one costs cruisers real money every single year and I want to set the record straight.

Cruise line shore excursions are convenient, yes. But they come at a premium price, often significantly higher than booking the same or a better experience independently or through a reputable third party like Viator.

Here's what you actually need to know: independent shore excursions are almost always less expensive, often smaller and more personal, and frequently more flexible in terms of what you see and how long you spend there.

The ONE caveat: if you book independently make sure your excursion gets you back to the ship on time. The ship will not wait. For that reason many experienced cruisers choose independent options at ports where they feel confident navigating, and stick with ship excursions at ports where timing or logistics feel more complex.

Here's your travel tip: a trusted travel advisor can help you identify which ports are safe for independent exploration and which ones are worth booking through the ship. That guidance alone can save you hundreds of dollars on a longer cruise.

Flashback Friday and today we're talking about one of the most underrated decisions you'll make when planning any trip.

Where you actually sleep. 🏨

Here's something I've learned from years of travel, both personally and for my clients. Staying right in the heart of a destination isn't always necessary, and sometimes it's not even the smartest move.

On our recent London trip we stayed near London City Airport for the first four days, then moved to the Stratford area for three nights. Neither location was smack in the middle of tourist central. But both were incredibly close to public transit, which meant we could hop on the Tube and be anywhere in the city we wanted to be in minutes.

The result? We paid significantly less for our accommodations and never once felt like we were missing out. The Tube did all the heavy lifting.

Same principle applies closer to home. For years when doing ship tours and cruising out of Galveston, we've stayed outside the immediate port area. Yes it means an earlier wake up call on embarkation day. But the savings on the overnight stay? Absolutely worth setting that alarm a little earlier.

Here's your travel tip: before automatically booking the most central hotel, ask yourself how you're actually getting around. If public transit is strong or a short rideshare gets you everywhere you need to be, staying just outside the action can save you real money without sacrificing a single experience.

Sometimes the best seat in the house isn't front row. It's just close enough. 🌍

What first time European travelers almost always get wrong.

After 20+ years of helping couples plan their first trips to Europe, a few mistakes come up again and again. Not because people aren't prepared, but because nobody told them what to expect.

They underestimate the walking.
Europe is a walking destination. 15,000 to 20,000 steps a day on an active itinerary is completely normal. Wear broken in shoes. Not new ones. Broken in ones with miles already on them. Your feet will thank you on day five.

They try to see too much.
The couples who come home most satisfied are rarely the ones who hit eight countries in ten days. They're the ones who slowed down, stayed longer in fewer places, and actually had time to wander. Less is genuinely more in Europe.

They don't plan for jet lag.
Stay awake until local bedtime on day one no matter how exhausted you feel. Get outside in natural daylight. Skip the long nap. Most travelers adjust by day two or three when they follow this approach.

They skip the travel advisor.
Europe is complex to plan well. Knowing which hotel puts you in the heart of the action, what's included on an escorted tour, and how to navigate booking windows for popular sites are exactly the details a 20+ year veteran handles so you don't have to.

Your first European trip should feel like magic. Not like homework.
