Humpback season is just getting started, and the whales are rolling in steady! 🌊

This morning, we had an incredible group of 7 humpbacks out enjoying the beautiful conditions with us! ☀️ With clear skies and calm seas, it was the perfect day to be out on the water.

After spending the summer feeding in the nutrient-rich waters of Alaska, these giants have been stocking up on energy for their journey south. Now, the season is just beginning, and we can’t wait to see what the coming weeks have in store! 🐋💙

An extraordinary encounter off San Diego—short-finned pilot whales! 🐋🌊

Despite their name, these whales are actually members of the dolphin family. They live in close-knit social groups and dive deep to hunt squid, their primary food source.

Pilot whales were once common off Southern California, but they largely disappeared from the region following the strong 1982–83 El Niño. Sightings have remained rare ever since, occurring more often during warmer-water years.

Seeing them in our local waters was an incredible surprise—and a reminder that you never know what the next trip might bring!

Devil Rays! A rare sight off the Southern California coast until recently!🌊

Also known as mobula rays. They’re much more common in the warmer waters off Baja and the Gulf of California, so seeing groups like this in California is always something special.

Mobulas are famous for launching themselves completely out of the water. Scientists don’t know exactly why they jump, but theories include communication, courtship, removing parasites and social behavior.

They also gather in large groups called aggregations, sometimes numbering in the hundreds or even thousands, often where food is concentrated or during breeding activity.

Three cruising just beneath the surface is cool enough… but when an entire group starts flying out of the water, it’s unforgettable. 🤯
