This weekend, three storms are moving at once. Hurricane Simon and Tropical Storm Rachel are in the Pacific, and Isaias came ashore on the Gulf Coast. We pray for everyone in their paths.
Their names caught my attention:
Rachel means "ewe," a sheep.
Simon means "he has heard."
Isaias (Isaiah) means "the Lord is salvation."
Put together, they echo the Savior's words: "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me" (John 10:27). To the Nephites He said His other sheep "shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd" (3 Nephi 15:21).
Storm names don't tell us when Christ will return. The scriptures are clear: "of that day and hour knoweth no man" (Matthew 24:36), and "the hour and the day no man knoweth" (D&C 49:7). Still, the message these names spell out is true. The Good Shepherd knows His sheep, and "there shall be no other name given nor any other way nor means whereby salvation can come… only in and through the name of Christ" (Mosiah 3:17).
President Russell M. Nelson has invited us to "Hear Him." In a noisy and uncertain world, that is still the invitation.
Jesus Christ is our King and Redeemer, and He is coming again.
