It's your anniversary. Instead of the same restaurant, the same booth and the same "should we just get the usual?", you're somewhere new.

Maybe you're waking up over turquoise water in Bora Bora, with nothing on the schedule but breakfast delivered by canoe.
Maybe you're sinking into a petal-filled bath in the Seychelles while the jungle hums outside your villa.

Maybe it's dinner on a rooftop in Athens as the Acropolis turns gold, and you're both quiet for a second because it doesn't feel real.

Where is it?..
If you followed along with my honeymooners in Portugal, you've been closer than you think. Just north of the border is Galicia, Spain's green, misty northwest corner. Its capital, Santiago de Compostela, is about two and a half hours from Porto.

Why does the door open?..
It's a tradition that goes back nearly 600 years. Whenever July 25 falls on a Sunday, Santiago celebrates a Holy Year, and the cathedral's famous door stays open all year. 2027 is one of those years, and the next isn't until 2032.

What does that mean for travelers?..
The whole region comes alive with concerts, festivals, and street celebrations. People arrive from all over the world, many after walking the Camino de Santiago, and you can feel the energy the moment you arrive.

What should I eat?..
Honestly, everything. Tender octopus dusted with paprika. Blistered PadrĆ³n peppers, named for a town right on the Camino. Mussels and oysters from the coast. And a slice of tarta de Santiago, the almond cake stamped with the city's cross. All with a cold glass of AlbariƱo, of course.

How does it fit with Portugal?..
Perfectly. Start in Porto with port w**e cellars and riverside dinners, then head north along the coast into Galicia. Two countries, one trip, and some of the best food in Europe.

What's the catch?..
Everyone else wants to be there too. The best hotels will book up early, so quieter months like May, June, or October make a real difference.

Why does the door open?..

Everyone talks about Bali. Let's talk about Java instead. Here's why. šŸŒ‹

Because you can spend one day hiking volcanoes and the next cycling slowly through the countryside, with a long lunch and a massage somewhere in between.

And because it still feels like a discovery.

Java is perfect for the couple who's done the beach resort thing and wants a trip with a little more thrill to it. For travelers who love history and culture, who don't mind an early alarm for a once-in-a-lifetime view, and who'd rather come home with adventures to tell than just a tan.

It's probably not the trip for someone who wants to unpack once and spend a week by the pool. And that's okay. That's what Bali is for. šŸ˜‰

It's not the easy trip. The drives are long, the alarms are early, and the pacing has to be just right. That's where I come in. šŸ’›

Somewhere in Munich right now, a brass band is playing, strangers are linking arms on long wooden benches, and someone is handing you a stein the size of YOUR head. šŸ»

It looks effortless in photos. Here's what actually goes into planning it well:

šŸŗ The tent problem. Table reservations go fast, often months before the festival. If you're booking late, I start with what's still available and build the days around it, not the other way around.

šŸØ The hotel math. Munich hotels get pricey and fill up during Oktoberfest. Staying right by the grounds is convenient but costly, so I weigh walkability against value and find the spot that makes sense for you.

šŸ“… Weekend vs. weekday. Weekends have the biggest energy and the biggest crowds. Most people want the magic without the chaos, so I balance your dates to get both.

šŸ”ļø The recovery plan. Five days of tents sounds fun until day three. I build in slow days in the Alps or Salzburg so you come home rested instead of needing a vacation from your vacation.

That's the part you don't see. And it's the part that makes the trip feel easy. šŸ’›

Wild horses roaming free. A castle you can explore after dark. A steam train chugging through a snowy valley.

No, this isn't a storybook. It's Romania.

Ride through pastel villages in a horse-drawn carriage, past fortified churches that have stood for centuries. Picnic among the ruins of a medieval abbey with mountains behind you. Have lunch with a shepherd high in the meadows. It all feels like a page torn from a fairy tale, except you get to step inside it.

I'm always looking for places that make my clients say "wait, that's real?" and this one just moved to the top of my list.

There's a version of a Highland getaway everyone already knows. Tartan blankets, a roaring fire, a famous golf course down the road. It's lovely. It's also exactly what you'd expect.
Here's the one you don't see coming.

An hour into the mountains, past where the road narrows and the phone signal fades, sits a hotel with a Lucian Freud on the wall and a chandelier made of red deer antlers hanging over the lobby. By day, you're out in glens turning gold and copper, the air sharp enough to feel in your chest. By night, you're standing under one of the only International Dark Sky Parks in the world, tracing constellations with a certified Star Ranger while, if you're lucky, the Aurora Borealis puts on a show just for you.

That's The Fife Arms. Braemar, Scotland. And this is why I would send people here instead of the obvious choice: because a great trip should surprise you a little. It should feel like you found something, not just booked something.

Autumn is when it all comes together. Cool days for wandering, long nights for stargazing, and a fire and a dram waiting for you when you're done.

Galway City hits you in color firstā€¦ painted storefronts, a fiddle spilling out of some pub doorway before youā€™ve even found your hotel.

Instead of a quick photo stop at the Cliffs of Moher, Iā€™d have you arrive at sunrise. Just you, the wind, and 700 feet of Atlantic cliffside with no one else around yet. Thatā€™s the moment youā€™d still be talking about years later.

Iā€™d choose Connemara over another night in the city, because thereā€™s a version of Ireland that only exists in the bogs and lakes out westā€¦ quiet, wild, and a little bit magic, with Kylemore Abbey rising right out of the water like something from a storybook.

And instead of a standard hotel, Iā€™d have you sleep at Ashford Castleā€¦ an 800 year old castle on the edge of Lough Corrib, once home to the Guinness family, now the kind of place where falconry and afternoon tea are just part of a normal day.

And instead of rushing the drive south, Iā€™d build in slow time through the Ring of Kerry and Di**le. Sheep on the hillsides. Fishing villages that spill right into the sea. Views that change every time the road bends.

"We already did Greece."

I hear this more than you'd think. Someone did the classic trip years ago, Santorini sunsets, Mykonos beach clubs, a blur of white and blue, and it was incredible. Genuinely one of the best trips of their life.

But here's the thing: that was one beautiful chapter of Greece. Not the whole story.

Because there's another side of the country waiting, the one locals actually live in. It's Paros, where the old Byzantine walking path still connects mountain villages the way it did centuries ago. It's the Peloponnese, where centuries-old fortresses stand quietly over the water and stone villages tell a completely different story than anything in the Cyclades. It's a hilltop retreat with olive groves stretching to the horizon and not another tourist in sight.

The islands you visit should change depending on where you are in your love affair with a place. Your first Greece trip is about falling for it. Your second is about going deeper, quieter, further into the country's heart.

So if you've "done Greece" already, that's not a reason to skip it next time you're planning a trip. It's the reason to go back.
