Understanding 2021 FMCSA Compliance Data.

As you set your goals for 2022, it is important to understand FMCSA compliance trends.
Staying compliant is the first step to avoiding unnecessary fines. Here are some key take always from last year:
• Since the pandemic, there have been more off-site audits than on-site
• 53% of FMCSA reviews were performed on small fleets (1-6 trucks). More than 80% of reviews were on carriers with less than 20 trucks.
• 94% of carriers reviewed had at least one violation.
• Average violation per carrier was six.
• Top violations centered around CDL, Drug testing, HOS, DQ Files & Inspections.
• Most reviewed months: March & April.
• Least reviewed months: October & November.
• Average fine for 2021 was $6,621. Although this was a decrease in 2020 average fines (almost $11k), the pandemic was an abnormal year with outlier figures.
• Most fines states: TX, NJ, CA, FL, GA
• Least fined states: NM, WY, DC, HI, NH
• In 2021, FMCSA increased maximum fine to $196,992. Per the Federal Civil Penalties Inflation Adjustment Act of 2015, federal agencies must increase fines each year to account for inflation.
• Clearinghouse mandate now going on two years. As per most government regulations, agencies tend to allow a two to three year 'digestion period' before becoming harsher with enforcements (especially as more and more State Drivers Licensing Agencies adopt Clearinghouse). Plan for increased clearinghouse violations (up to $5,833 per offense).
• As part of FMCSA strategic plan (2021-2023), the agency will be focusing less on equipment and more on human errors like speeding, distracted driving and seat belt usage. The implication for this is that DQ Files, Drug Tests, ELDT, Clearinghouse requirements and other staff trainings need to be taken more seriously.

Some Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks recalled for methane issue
Paccar is recalling some 1,107 Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks of various models because the methane detection systems in the trucks won’t function if the system loses power., according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documents.
As a result, the driver could be unaware of a system malfunction or the presence of excessive methane levels, increasing the risk of injury or fire.

Trucks included in the recall are:
2016-2022 Peterbilt 567 and 579
2021-2022 Peterbilt 536
2017-2021 Kenworth T880
2016-2022 Kenworth T680
2018-2020 Kenworth T440
2020 Kenworth T270
2021 Kenworth T280

To correct the issue, dealers will re-wire the warning alarm for free. Owners can contact Peterbilt customer service at 1-940-591-4220 with recall number 21PBN, and Kenworth customer service at 1-425-828-5888 with recall number 21KWH.
NHTSA’s recall number is 21V-00N.

Driving in the winter can be very rewarding, but it does have its hazards.
With these key tips, you can reduce the odds that you will suffer an accident due to the winter weather.

STAY SAFE DRIVING IN SNOW AND ICE THIS WINTER
Winter driving poses a number of unique hazards for many truck drivers. Increased snow and ice, slipperier roads, and shorter days can all combine to make your drive more difficult than before. Fortunately, there are several strategies you can use to create a safer journey.
Slow down.
When you’re on a deadline, it’s tempting to rush. Unfortunately, that can quickly increase your risk of an accident. Instead, slow down and take your time instead of rushing to your destination.
Leave a buffer between you and other vehicles.
Make sure you have plenty of room to maneuver. Chances are, you know exactly how long it will take you to stop your rig. Make sure you don’t bunch so tightly with other trucks that you cannot get out of the way if someone else slips on those icy roads.
Carry an extra set of wipers.
As you put miles on your truck, you’re also putting miles–and damage–on your wipers. A clean windshield can make all the difference as winter wears on, so keep a fresh set in the truck so that you can always change them out if needed.
Turn on your headlights.
A little light can go a long way toward brightening things up and making it easier to see in icy weather conditions.
Maneuver with care.
On icy roads, you may find that it’s better to go around a potential obstacle than it is to try to come to a sudden stop. Since you’re allowing adequate following room, you have more space to maneuver if needed.
Watch conditions carefully.
Listen to what other truck drivers have to say about the road ahead. Keep an eye on tire spray, which will give you a good idea of what other drivers are kicking up–and therefore what you’ll have to deal with as you drive down the road.

How trucking has given back in 2021
During the second year of the pandemic, companies and organizations within the trucking industry have continued to provide its community with support when it’s needed the most. Trucking Moves America Forward shares their stories.
Trucking Moves America Forward (TMAF) has created a year-in-review for the trucking industry’s charitable acts throughout this holiday season and 2021 as a whole.
Trucking companies and organizations submitted their stories of charitable works to TMAF after an industrywide call for submissions through email and social media.
“Over the past year, our industry and nation have all faced extraordinary challenges as we recover from economic hardships from the global pandemic and work around the clock to prevent supply chain disruptions,” said Kevin Burch, co-chairman of TMAF and VP of government affairs and sales at MTS.
“Despite these challenges, our frontline workers in the trucking industry have shown consistency and resilience by keeping a steady hand on the wheel to keep our nation moving forward," Burch continued. "We are proud to help our communities stay healthy and safe by ensuring the delivery of food, medicine, and other essential supplies.”
