5 Things You Didn’t Know About Capitol Reef

The park is basically one giant 100-mile crack in the Earth. The Waterpocket Fold is a 100-mile-long monocline that runs the length of the park, causing over 7,000 feet of elevation change

Capitol Reef has exactly two paved roads: Highway 24 and the 8-mile Scenic Drive. Everything else…Cathedral Valley, Burr Trail, Notom-Bullfrog, Capitol Gorge…is dirt. Hundreds of miles of it. Most visitors never leave the pavement, which means most visitors never actually see the park.

The Cathedral Valley monoliths are made of the same rock as Arches, they just failed differently. The towering formations in Cathedral Valley are carved from Entrada Sandstone, the same rock that forms the arches at Arches National Park, but here it erodes into massive freestanding towers instead…some over 400 feet tall.

Glass Mountain is a dome of gypsum crystal, formed 165 million years ago from evaporating seawater, then slowly pushed upward through cracks in the rock below. It’s still moving. Gypsum dissolves in water, and given enough time, this dome will collapse into a sinkhole.

almost had a Wayne’s World name. Before it became Capitol Reef, the area was known as “Wayne’s Wonderland.”

No one can tell me a “piece of machinery” can’t change your life…Coco has certainly changed so much.

It was my first Outdoor Retailer show and I went in expecting a floor full of the same big legacy brands you see everywhere. Instead I found rows of small, independent gear makers and got to actually talk to the owners and designers behind the products.

There’s a whole section of the pavilion dedicated to giving smaller brands visibility. Most booths I stopped at were somebody’s entrepreneurial dream sitting on a folding table.

It reminded me why I love coming to trade shows like this and the industry as a whole. It’s still full of people who want to build something real and provide solutions.

On my way to Minneapolis for Outdoor Retailer!
I’m so excited to have been chosen as 1 of 150 creators invited out by Outdoor Retailer in partnership with Popfly for their inaugural Wild Reach Program to bring you behind the scenes of the show.
Let me know if there’s anything you want me to check out for you.
And any brands focused on camping, hiking, paddling, or outdoor/personal safety…I’d love to connect.
See ya in Minnesota!
