As a U.S. customs broker, we're frequently asked about declared values and duties. A common question is: Does the release of a shipment mean that Customs has agreed with the declared values or the duties?
Regarding the relationship between releasing and duties, the answer is, when your shipment is released, it simply means you're allowed to pick up your goods—nothing more. U.S. Customs reserves the right to review and adjust the declared values or duties for up to 314 days after the entry has been imported. In some cases, this review period can be extended or suspended for as long as three years.
