Most people need a notary about once every few years, and almost always with a deadline attached.
A few things worth knowing before you come in:
• Bring current photo ID. An expired one is the most common reason someone gets turned away.
• Bring the document unsigned unless you've been told otherwise — some acts have to be signed in front of the notary.
• Everyone signing has to be physically there, each with their own ID.
And one thing we can't do: a notary in California isn't a lawyer and can't give legal advice — we can't tell you which document you need or what a clause means. If that's what you're after, you need an attorney, and we'll say so rather than take your money.
There are around 4.4 million notaries in the US, so they're not scarce. What's scarce is finding one at 4pm on a Friday when the bank has closed. We do walk-ins at the counter, and we'll travel to you — hospital, care home, or your office — by appointment. Evenings and weekends too, if you arrange it ahead.
