Pipelines are among the most effective methods for transporting substantial amounts of energy-related products over long distances. Pipelines enable the safe and reliable transportation of fuels to areas where they are needed — supplying homes, businesses, farms, and transportation networks.

In addition to supporting the economy, pipelines deliver the resources that communities depend on each and every day.

Diesel fuel is essential for everyday life. It powers trucks that deliver goods to stores and equipment used in construction and agriculture. Many industries rely on diesel to function.

Heavy-duty vehicles, freight transportation, farm equipment, and backup generators all need diesel because it is efficient and reliable. Diesel engines are popular for their durability and ability to manage tough jobs in different sectors.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration states that diesel fuel is a crucial part of the nation's energy mix. It supports transportation, industry, and infrastructure throughout the country.

Pipelines are constantly monitored to ensure their safe operation. Pipelines are continually inspected through a variety of methods, including advanced technologies and equipment such as a control center and pressure monitoring systems, as well as routine inspections, to identify potential issues that may develop in the pipeline and ensure continued system integrity.

Additionally, federal safety regulations require that pipelines be regularly inspected, tested, and maintained to protect communities and the environment from potential damage.

Wolverine Pipe Line Company was proud to support the 2026 Joe Expo at St. Joe High School this past Saturday, hosted by the FIRST Team 3620, The Average Joes Robotics Team.

The event provided a great opportunity to introduce students, families, and community members to Wolverine’s SAFE Program and share hands-on education about Pascal’s Law, Bernoulli’s principle, the venturi effect, underground utilities, pipelines, 811, and the role Wolverine plays in safely moving the fuel our communities depend on.

Thank you to the Average Joes Robotics Team for hosting a great event and for allowing us to be part of a day focused on learning, innovation, and safety.

Pipelines are a vital source of support for both rural communities and agriculture by enabling farmers to use buried pipes to safely farm their land (at regular working heights) and to transport fuels and other energy products throughout the United States.

Propane is delivered through these pipelines for heating, cooking, and farming operations, while an agricultural economy uses hundreds of billions of gallons of diesel fuel annually to run trucks, tractors, and combines.

Spring planting and springtime fieldwork can include activities such as digging drains and installing fences, and are often done to promote a good growing season. Prior to beginning any of these types of agricultural projects (which will disturb the soil), call 811 and ask them to locate any underground utilities and mark their location so you do not damage them.

Additionally, there are agriculture-specific safety resources online that provide information and guidelines for safe digging practices in agricultural settings, available through the FarmSafe 811 service.

It's time for a new year of spring digging, and with that comes many opportunities for homeowners to work on their outdoor projects. According to a recent nationwide study conducted by Call Before You Dig, 74% (approximately 60 million) of America's homeowners plan to do some type of digging in the spring.

To ensure you're digging safely before your next project begins, simply call 811, and they will mark the location of all underground utility lines. To learn more about how you can dig safely, visit 811beforeyoudig.com.

Some underground utility lines are very close to the surface — only inches away — and will be damaged with minimal digging, unless they are located prior to digging.

No matter what your project is (planting a tree, building a fence, or landscaping), contact 811 several days before digging to allow time for utility marking.

Visit www.811beforeyoudig.com for additional information on safe digging practices and to find 811 in your state.

Backhoes lead the way when underground utilities are damaged, but shovels follow closely as the second most common source of damage to these lines.

Even though small jobs such as tree planting, mailbox installation, and fence post placement may seem too minor for an outage to occur from damage to an underground line, it is still possible.

It doesn't matter what you are doing; whether your job is big or small, you should call 811 before digging so that all underground utility lines can be located and marked.
