A client recently asked us about safaris.

Safaris are not your normal vacation and require a great deal of planning—but they are well worth the adventure.

Check out this informative guide from Tammy’s Platinum Travel.

🦁 A Practical Guide to Planning a South African Safari

Understanding the destinations, seasons, accommodations, game drives and choices that shape your safari experience.

A safari is different from most vacations. You aren’t simply choosing a hotel and deciding what attractions you want to visit. The location of your safari, the type of reserve, the time of year, the lodge, the style of game drives and the number of nights you spend in the bush all influence what you experience.

South Africa is particularly appealing because you can combine incredible wildlife with destinations such as Cape Town and the Winelands.

🏞️ NATIONAL PARK OR PRIVATE RESERVE?

This is one of the biggest decisions when planning a South African safari.

National Parks can offer:

• Self-drive opportunities
• Guided game drives
• A wide range of accommodations
• Greater budget flexibility
• The experience of exploring a large public wilderness

Private Reserves often offer:

• Guided game drives with experienced guides and trackers
• Fewer vehicles around wildlife sightings
• Night drives
• Walking safaris at some properties
• Potentially greater flexibility, including off-road driving where permitted
• Upscale and luxury accommodations
• A more intimate, lodge-centered experience

There isn’t a universal “better” choice. It depends on how you want to experience the African bush.

🦒 HOW MANY NIGHTS?

2 nights: A short introduction
3 nights: A popular starting point
4 nights: More time to settle into the safari experience
5+ nights: Ideal for a deeper experience or multiple reserves

📸 PRIVATE OR SHARED GAME DRIVE?

A shared vehicle can be a great way to meet other travelers and control costs.

A private vehicle provides greater flexibility with departure times, photography and how long you spend at wildlife sightings.

Private vehicles can be particularly valuable for photographers, families and special celebrations.

🌍 WHAT MIGHT YOU SEE?

South Africa is famous for the Big Five:

🦁 Lion
🐆 Leopard
🐘 Elephant
🦏 Rhinoceros
🐃 Cape Buffalo

But the Big Five are only part of the experience. Giraffes, zebras, hippos, wild dogs, hyenas, numerous antelope species and hundreds of bird species may also be encountered.

And remember: wildlife sightings are never guaranteed.

📅 WHEN SHOULD YOU GO?

South Africa offers safari opportunities throughout the year.

May–September: Generally cooler and drier, with less vegetation and potentially better visibility.

October–April: Generally warmer and greener, with lush landscapes, seasonal rains and excellent birding opportunities.

There is no single “perfect” month for everyone.

🍷 WHY STOP AT SAFARI?

One of the great things about South Africa is that your safari can be part of a much larger adventure.

Consider combining:

Cape Town + Winelands + Safari

Or even Victoria Falls

You can experience incredible scenery, food, wine, culture and history—then head into the bush for an unforgettable wildlife experience.

🐾 ONE FINAL THOUGHT

A safari is not simply a vacation where you go see animals.

It is an opportunity to experience an ecosystem, observe wildlife behaving naturally and spend time in an environment that operates on an entirely different rhythm from everyday life.

The best safari itinerary begins with understanding the traveler—not simply choosing the lodge.

And perhaps the best advice for a first safari is simple:

Leave room for the unexpected.

Some of the moments you remember most may be the ones that weren’t on the itinerary.
