Did you know that, in addition to mining and cattle ranching, sheep herding played a significant role in the economy of Saguache County? At one point, the county was home to numerous sheep ranches, and wool production was a major industry.

Stretching from the sagebrush-covered floor of the San Luis Valley to alpine peaks along the Continental Divide, Saguache County offers experiences that are increasingly difficult to find in today's busy world: solitude, silence, and room to breathe.

While visiting, experience some of our beloved hot springs:

🌊 Near the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Joyful Journey Hot Springs Spa features mineral-rich pools with spectacular mountain views and some of the darkest night skies in the state.

🌊 Just south of Hooper, Sand Dunes Swimming Pool offers family-friendly soaking and
swimming pools fed by naturally heated water.

🌊 For those seeking a more secluded experience, Valley View Hot Springs combines geothermal pools, hiking trails, wildlife viewing, and access to one of the area's most unusual attractions: a colony of Brazilian free-tailed bats that emerge from nearby caves on summer evenings. Visitors should note that Valley View is clothing-optional and operated by a nonprofit land trust dedicated to conservation and recreation.

Wide-open landscapes. Dark skies. Quiet nights... It’s no surprise that Saguache County and the surrounding San Luis Valley have earned a reputation as one of Colorado’s most talked-about hotspots for UFO sightings and unexplained phenomena.

For decades, locals and visitors alike have shared stories of mysterious lights moving across the valley sky, unexplained aerial activity, and encounters that are still hard to explain. Some say it’s the region’s vast isolation and high elevation. Others think there’s something more to it.

Whether you’re a skeptic, believer, or just curious, there’s no denying the atmosphere here after dark feels a little different.

The most famous UFO destination in the San Luis Valley is UFO Watchtower, located near Hooper.
