Postcards from Europe: Lisbon, Portugal

We loved Lisbon and would definitely return. The weather, the people, the food, the history… there is so much to see and do!

Like and follow to learn more about European cities as I post from our summer adventure.

Day two in Lisbon was all about walking, exploring, and doing a little damage to the credit card. 😆

Of course, we had to stop and buy a Cristiano Ronaldo Portugal World Cup jersey. When in Portugal, right?

We also visited Livraria Bertrand, the oldest bookstore in the world, and picked up some adorable books for the grandkids to help them learn a little Portuguese. They even stamped the books to show they were purchased at the world's oldest bookstore.

At one point, we stumbled across an Aldi and naturally had to pop in to check out the grocery selection. Tell me you're a traveler without telling me you're a traveler. 😂

Right next door, we found the cutest perfume shop called Next Memory, where I created my own custom solid perfume complete with a monogrammed case and holder. Such a fun souvenir to bring home.

Sardines, anyone? Lisbon has an entire store dedicated to sardines, and it's every bit as colorful and quirky as you'd imagine.

Before calling it a day, we picked up cork postcards to mail home. Portugal is the world's leading producer of cork, so it seemed like the perfect Lisbon souvenir.

Overall, we made some great memories, found a few unique treasures, and somehow turned a day of "just walking around" into a very expensive day. 😅

Have you ever come home from vacation with the most random souvenir? Tell me what it was! 👇✈️

We traded our walking shoes for a tuk-tuk and explored Lisbon's steep hills the easy way. 👟

From historic neighborhoods to scenic viewpoints, it was one of the best ways to get around Lisbon, because these hills are no joke!

Our guide picked us up directly from our hotel, and we spent the next few hours seeing all the sights.

Such an inexpensive way to get familiar with the city before exploring more tomorrow.

As the first stop on our multi-country European adventure, Lisbon is already making a strong case for being one of our favorite cities.

I'll be sharing more as we travel through Europe by ocean cruise, train, and river cruise over the next few weeks, so make sure to Like and Follow.

Checked into our Lisbon home for the next few days.

Before every cruise, we like to arrive early and spend time exploring the embarkation city. This trip, we're staying at the InterContinental Lisbon, and it has been the perfect place to settle in before our Mediterranean cruise with Holland America Line.

The location couldn't be better.

We've walked almost everywhere, from sightseeing stops to restaurants and viewpoints, without feeling like we needed a taxi.

The staff welcomed us like old friends from the moment we arrived. The rooms are comfortable, the shower pressure is outstanding, and I have to mention the lobby.

The scent throughout the hotel is absolutely divine. Every time we walked through the doors, it felt like coming back to a luxury retreat after a day of exploring Lisbon.

If you're looking for a comfortable, convenient, and upscale hotel before setting sail, this one gets my recommendation.

Over the next few weeks, we'll be exploring Europe by cruise ship, train, and river ship, and Lisbon is giving us a pretty amazing start.

If you could add two extra days to any cruise vacation, which city would you choose?

😤 I'm so mad at my sister right now.

She had ONE job for our European sibling vacation.

Book the flights.

And somehow she managed to book us Business Class on a Lufthansa double-decker 747.

Now I'm ruined for life.

✅ Lie-flat seats.
✅ Noise-canceling headphones.
✅ Welcome drinks.
✅ Warm towels.
✅Amazing food

How am I supposed to go back to squeezing into economy after this?

Who's going to help me figure out how to pay for this new travel standard? 😂

✈️ Have you ever had a travel experience that completely spoiled you?

I just discovered the “packing Sudoku” method for travel. 👚

Apparently you take 9 clothing pieces, put them in a little 3x3 grid… and somehow get 27 outfits for Europe.

TWENTY SEVEN. 😂

As a math teacher, I respect the confidence.
As a woman packing for 26 nights in Europe… absolutely not!

Because serious questions:
Do these people not sweat? 💦
Do they never spill coffee or gelato on themselves? ☕

And where exactly are the chargers?
The pajamas?
The backup pants?
The shoes you will never wear?

At my age, I am NOT washing underwear in the sink!

At this point, my Sudoku needs to be 3 stories tall with a checked bag attached to it.

So tell me honestly…
Are you Team "Carry-On" or Team “I’m checking a bag and living my best life”?

There are a lot of beautiful places in the world, but the Amalfi Coast still lives rent-free in my head. 🇮🇹

So much so that we just booked our SECOND private tour with Taxi Mister Cab Driver-Naples & Amalfi coast- Salerno and we could not be more excited.

Last time, they picked us up right from the pier in Naples. This time, we’re booking from Salerno.

Either way, they make it incredibly easy. No stressing over trains, buses, or winding cliffside roads. They pick you up directly from your cruise port, show you the best spots along the Amalfi Coast, and get you back to the ship on time.

And somehow they make the whole day feel like you’re exploring Italy with friends who know every hidden corner, photo stop, and restaurant worth your time. Safe, fun, organized, and honestly one of the best decisions we made on our cruise.

If you’re planning an Amalfi Coast cruise stop, I highly recommend booking with them.

I shared all the details from our last trip here: https://heworkssoitravel.com/amalfi-coast-in-one-day/

Have you been to the Amalfi Coast yet, or is it still on your bucket list?

My husband made the mistake of showing me a $300 casino cruise offer.

We are now booked on an 11 night ocean cruise out of Portugal, a trip to Milan and Lake Como after we dock in Rome, followed by a train trip through Switzerland to board a 7 night river cruise along the Rhine.

Last count, we were up to 9 countries and 28 days.

Don’t tempt a teacher in May (IYKYK) or that $300 deal may just be the best $10,000 we’ll ever spend. 😊

It’s official… I’m going to the Southern Travelers Explore Conference in Alabama. 🎉✈️

Their Louisiana River Parishes conference was part learning, part inspiration, and part “How did I just make so many new friends in one weekend?” 🤍

I just grabbed my ticket for next March in Tuscaloosa, and I’m already excited to dig into this destination, so I can bring you all the best spots, stays, and experiences 🏨

And this time Kevin is coming with me.

With the University of Alabama 🏈 right there, it only felt right to bring a football coach along. I mean, I’m just being supportive of his interests 😂

If you’re a content creator or blogger, I can’t recommend this conference enough.

You’ll learn a ton, meet the best people, and have way more fun than you expect ✨
