After packing, unpacking, repacking, questioning every life choice I’ve ever made, unpacking again, and repacking one final time…I THINK I’M DONE. 😂 It was quite the workout!

In my defense, this is a 12-day trip—including two travel days—and Alaska apparently requires packing for approximately four seasons. 😂

And let me make one thing perfectly clear: Do NOT come to this travel advisor for packing advice. 🤣 I can plan the trip. I can book the trip. Apparently packing for the trip is where my professional expertise ends.

However, I did learn something! Packing cubes are great for organization, but when you’re packing bulky Alaska clothes, they don’t really do not make things less bulky. So the sweaters and other fluffy offenders went into vacuum compression bags—suck the air out and suddenly there’s hope! 🙌 Everything else got folded nicely and packed normally.

And before anyone says it…

Technically, I did NOT overpack, I promise!

I just packed for every possible weather condition, excursion, and dinners. 😂 Alaska weather can change by the hour!

I hope to have room for ONE souvenir sweatshirt. Emphasis on may. And one. 🤣

I cannot say enough wonderful things about my experience at Sandals Royal Bahamian! The difference in quality, service, and attention to detail was truly remarkable.

From the moment I arrived, the service was exceptional. Every staff member I encountered was professional, courteous, friendly, and genuinely seemed to care about providing an outstanding guest experience. What impressed me even more is that Sandals has a no-tipping policy for most staff, so this level of service wasn’t being provided with the expectation of a tip—it simply appeared to be the standard.

The resort itself is absolutely beautiful and exceptionally well maintained. The rooms were clean, fresh, and beautifully appointed, and the entire property had the polished, upscale feel you expect from a luxury all-inclusive resort.

As a travel advisor, I pay attention to the details that can make or break a client’s vacation: cleanliness, maintenance, staff interactions, service, atmosphere, and the overall guest experience. Sandals Royal Bahamian delivered across the board.

If your budget allows for it, I would highly recommend Sandals Royal Bahamian. Yes, it is a more expensive vacation, but based on what I experienced, you’re receiving a noticeably higher level of service and quality for that investment.

I was very disappointed with my recent stay at RIU Palace Paradise Island. Unfortunately, both the condition of the property and the level of service fell well below what I expected from a RIU Palace resort.

Our room was noticeably dated and poorly maintained. The curtains were torn, paint was chipped in multiple areas, and a section of molding near the bathroom mirror had come away from the wall and was simply left in that condition. These weren’t minor cosmetic preferences—the room showed visible signs of deferred maintenance. I have photos documenting the condition.

Service was equally disappointing. We repeatedly requested bottled water during our stay and, despite asking several times, received it only once or twice.

One experience at the pool/beach area was particularly frustrating. At approximately 4:00 p.m., we asked to have an umbrella set up and were told no. Shortly afterward, a severe storm moved in with heavy rain, thunder and lightning. The weather became bad enough that umbrellas were actually blowing toward the ocean. When I asked an attendant for towels so we could cover ourselves while getting out of the storm, I was again told no. I specifically explained the circumstances and asked whether an exception could be made because of the severe weather, but the answer remained no. I found the complete lack of concern or willingness to assist guests under those circumstances very disappointing.

I am also a travel advisor and had arranged a property tour during my stay so that I could better evaluate the resort for future clients. The staff member was aware that this was the purpose of my visit, yet the scheduled tour was canceled. That was especially disappointing from a professional standpoint.

I understand that every resort can have an occasional maintenance or service issue. My concern is that this was not one isolated incident. Between the condition of the room, the overall appearance of the property, repeated service issues, and the canceled property tour, the experience consistently fell short.

Based on my stay, I would have difficulty recommending this property to my clients without significant improvements in both maintenance and guest service.

After my stay, I also learned that this particular RIU property is not as highly regarded as many others within the brand. Unfortunately, based on my experience, I can understand why. Anid Kalifa
