Last Sunday, November 9, the very first transmitter-tagged monarch butterfly of the season (identified as MW026 from the Monarch Collaboration Project) officially arrived at the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve in Mexico!

Released on September 27, 2025, in Lawrence, Kansas, MW026 began her incredible 43-day journey south. She crossed Oklahoma and Texas, entered Mexico through Tamaulipas, and continued across San Luis Potosรญ, Querรฉtaro, and the State of Mexico before finally reaching the mountain forests where millions of monarchs spend the winter.

This monarchโ€™s journey was tracked through cutting-edge technology as part of a scientific collaboration between Monarch Watch and Cellular Tracking Technologies, led by David La Puma. The goal: to better understand monarch migration using satellite and long-range tracking.

Monarch Watchโ€™s tagging program (started decades ago and continued by thousands of volunteers across North America) helps researchers uncover where monarchs originate, when they migrate, and what challenges they face along the way. Each tagged butterfly carries a tiny, lightweight sticker coded for individual tracking, ensuring every data point contributes to protecting this extraordinary species.
