What if one of the best measures of an intelligent collision-prevention system is how often it doesn't alert the driver?

A professional driver already has an extraordinary amount of information to process. Adding AI capable of detecting hundreds of objects around the vehicle doesn't necessarily make the job safer if every detection becomes another warning.

A pedestrian isn't automatically a risk because they're nearby.

Neither is a parked vehicle, a pole, a curb, or another trailer.

What matters is the relationship between that object and what the tractor-trailer is actually doing.

Where is it moving? Where is the truck moving? How is the trailer articulating? Are those paths beginning to intersect? And if a meaningful conflict is developing, when does the driver actually need to know?

That's a much different problem than object detection.

Behind the scenes, an intelligent system can be continuously seeing, tracking, evaluating geometry, interpreting relationships, and recalculating risk, while saying absolutely nothing.

Then something changes.

The risk becomes meaningful. The Warning Window™ opens. And the system has something worth saying while the professional driver still has time to act.

That's the kind of AI I'm interested in.
Not technology that constantly reminds the driver how intelligent it is.Technology intelligent enough to know when to stay out of the way.

What if the most valuable thing a collision-prevention system could give a professional driver isn’t another camera, another recording, or another stream of data?

What if it’s time?

Risk can develop quickly around a commercial vehicle. A pedestrian steps into view. A vehicle appears where the driver couldn’t see it moments before. A trailer begins tracking differently than expected.

The driver may be highly experienced and know exactly what to do.

The problem is whether there’s still enough time to do it.

That’s the thinking behind what we call the Warning Window™: creating additional decision-making margin before contact occurs.

Sometimes one or two additional seconds can mean more time to brake. More time to steer. More time to stop a maneuver before committing to it.

The objective isn’t to replace professional judgment. It’s to give that judgment a better opportunity to work.

That distinction matters as our industry moves deeper into AI, computer vision, and increasingly intelligent safety systems. The measure of progress shouldn’t simply be how much technology we can put on a truck.

It should be whether that technology creates a meaningful opportunity to change the outcome.

Most conversations about collision prevention stay stuck on technology in isolation—sensors, cameras, algorithms.

But intelligence only means something once it's behind the wheel, in real time, with a professional driver making the calls.

In this new post, I follow one driver through an ordinary day: a pre-trip inspection, a tight pull-away from the dock, a merge into traffic, two turns where other drivers misjudge the truck's path, and a backing maneuver into a crowded consignee. At every moment, I show how a Digital Vision System's layers of intelligence - object understanding, vehicle localization, environmental mapping, path and risk prediction - come together to give the driver something they didn't have before: time.

August is National Traffic Safety Awareness Month-a reminder that every decision on the road matters.

One of the simplest ways motorists can help improve safety is by staying out of a commercial truck's blind spots. If you can't see the driver in their mirrors, chances are they can't see you.

Giving trucks extra space, avoiding lingering beside a trailer, and allowing plenty of room when merging are small actions that can make a big difference.

Every driver can instantly recognize a pedestrian, a parked trailer, a pole, or another vehicle.

For a computer, that ability had to be invented.

One of the biggest breakthroughs in modern computer vision came with a technology called YOLO (You Only Look Once)... an approach that allowed machines to identify multiple objects in a scene fast enough to become useful in the real world.

That mattered because collision prevention is a real-time problem.

Knowing what happened after contact is valuable for documentation.

Knowing what's happening before contact creates the opportunity to change the outcome.

But detection alone isn't enough.

Recognizing a pole doesn't tell you whether it's a risk. Recognizing a pedestrian doesn't explain whether they're moving into the truck's path. Commercial vehicles introduce another layer of complexity as tractor and trailer geometry constantly changes through every maneuver.

Object detection is where machine perception begins, not where it ends.

Blind-side incidents have challenged fleets for decades.

Not because drivers lack experience.
Not because they aren't paying attention.

They're difficult because visibility changes constantly as the truck moves.

Mirrors help. Cameras help. Training helps.
But the environment itself keeps changing.

The autonomous vehicle world has taught transportation something important:

A heavy-duty truck needs to understand far more than lane position and forward distance to move safely through the real world.

It needs environmental understanding.

It needs to know what is around it, what is moving, what is fixed, what is near, what is approaching, where the vehicle is likely to travel, and where conflict may occur before the outcome is fixed.

But that intelligence should not be reserved only for a driverless future.

Professional drivers are in the seat today. They are navigating yards, terminals, customer facilities, city streets, construction zones, fuel islands, loading docks, tight turns, backing paths, blind-side maneuvers, weather, and risk now.

In my latest article, I write about why professional truckers deserve autonomous-level environmental intelligence now; not to replace the driver, but to support them with better awareness in the moments when outcomes can still change.

Because the driver is not obsolete.

The driver is operating now.

Anyone who has spent time around tractor-trailers knows the truck doesn't move as one rigid piece.

Every turn changes the relationship between the tractor, the trailer, nearby vehicles, fixed objects, and the space around them.

That's one of the reasons low-speed incidents continue to happen.

What does collision prevention actually require?

Not one camera.

Not one alert.

Not one piece of software.

It requires a system that can build understanding layer by layer—seeing the environment, recognizing what's around the vehicle, understanding location and movement, predicting risk, communicating clearly with the driver, and continuously learning over time.

In my latest article, I introduce what I call The Layers of Collision Prevention.

It's a way of thinking about fleet safety that goes beyond documentation and asks a different question:

What has to happen before a collision can be prevented?

Each layer builds on the one before it. Together, they create the opportunity to help professional drivers recognize developing risk while there's still time to act.

Because collision prevention isn't one technology.

It's a system of technologies working together in the moments before contact.
