Cool Cities

Cool Cities We are the Cool Cities Working Group, working to make Saratoga Springs a more sustainable city through community collaboration!

In 2008, Skidmore Students started the Cool Cities Campaign in Saratoga Springs. In 2009, we succeeded in getting Mayor Scott Johnson to sign the US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, pledging to lower greenhouse gas emissions 7% below 1990's levels. Since then, we've been working with the city to conduct a full greenhouse gas inventory of Saratoga Springs, assessing the current levels of emissi

ons. Once the inventory is complete, we will create a Climate Action Plan to reach the goals in the US Mayors Climate Protection Agreement. We are also working with citizens and other community organizations to create a comprehensive transportation proposal, addressing issues of vehicle idling, vehicle efficiency and bike lanes.

Sign this postcard to the Governor by January 6th requesting $20 million in the 2014-15 state budget specifically dedicated to funding pedestrian and bicycling infrastructure projects, with a minimum additional commitment of $20 million annually over the next five years, and Revision of NYSDOT's Preservation First policy so that it does not exclude new pedestrian and bicycling infrastructure projects and is consistentwith the intent of the state's Complete Streets law.

Saratoga Springs has a new ordinance in place to protect the environment. As YNN's Erin Moran reports, the initiative was led by a group of local college students who urged city officials to make the change.
