Tomorrow we open our doors to the American Welding Society Chicago Section, and we could not be more glad to host them.

A lot of the people walking in are students, early in a trade that built everything around them and still needs them badly. Our job for a day is simple: show them what modern welding actually looks like, answer their questions straight, and send them out a little more sure they picked the right path.

Welding gave this industry its foundation. The next generation is who keeps it standing.

"We run too many different parts to automate."

We hear that from job shops more than any other reason for staying manual. And for years it was fair. Old automation wanted one part, high volume, forever. That is not how a job shop lives.

That has changed. You do not automate the shop. You automate the one part, or the one family of parts, that shows up week after week. Flexible fixturing and quick changeovers mean a cell can run a handful of similar parts, not just one. The high-mix objection is now usually an assumption, not a fact.

So stop looking at everything you make. Look for the one job that repeats, ties up your best welder, and never really changes. Automate that. Keep the rest at the bench, where the flexibility actually matters.

You do not need a shop full of identical parts. You need one that earns it.

There is a myth that welding automation is only for the big plants running tens of thousands of identical parts.
Our research says otherwise. Nine in ten manufacturers investing in welding automation have fewer than 500 employees. Not giants. Job shops and mid-size fabricators solving one specific problem: a part they run constantly, a job they cannot staff, a quality issue they are tired of chasing.

You can argue about automation on a spec sheet for months. Or you can bring us the part.

That is what our Experience Center is for. You send the actual part, not a drawing, and we weld it. Then we tell you straight whether automation makes sense for it, what it would take, and where the trouble spots are. Sometimes the answer is "not yet," and we will tell you that too.

It is a lot cheaper to find that out on our floor than after the cell is installed on yours.

A good welder on a bad day is still a good welder. But they are human. Hour eight is not hour one. The last part of a long run is not the first.

That is the one thing a robot genuinely fixes. Not skill. Consistency. It does not get tired, distracted, or rushed at 4:55 on a Friday. Weld number 400 comes out exactly like weld number 1.

So the parts worth automating are not always the hard ones. They are the ones you run over and over, where the enemy is not difficulty, it is drift. Set the process right once, and the robot holds it there.

Before you spend a dollar on automation, answer one question honestly. Is the part even a good candidate?

Some parts are ready. Some need a fixture or a small design change first. Some are not worth automating at all, and a good partner tells you that before you write a check. A welder can usually sort it in the first few minutes: can the torch reach every joint, does the part show up the same way every time, is there enough volume to earn the setup.

Pittsburg Tank & Tower has been building steel structures since 1919. They will tell you themselves they are old school, and they are fine with that.

But when the company became fully employee-owned a few years ago, something shifted. When the people running the welds also own the place, throughput and consistency stop being management's problem and become everyone's. They decided it was time to automate. Not to replace their welders, but to protect them.

What they led with was not speed. It was getting their people away from the fumes and the repetitive strain, and making the weld come out the same every time. Speed came as a byproduct. They cut tower leg welding time in half and pushed tank accessory output up 30 percent. But the line their plant manager keeps coming back to is that it freed his best welders to take on the complex work only they can do.

That is what doing it right looks like. Not a robot instead of your welders. A robot that hands them back their skill.

A robot will weld a bad joint exactly as well as a good one. Every time, without flinching.

That is the part people miss when they shop for automation. The robot does not read the part. It does not notice the gap that drifted or the fit-up that wandered. It welds what you set it to weld, a thousand times, including the mistake. A person adjusts on the fly. A robot commits.

So the real work happens before the robot. Get the heat, the sequence, and the fit-up right by hand first. Then automation makes it repeatable instead of repeatably wrong.

Get the weld right and the robot earns its keep. Get it wrong and you have just automated a defect.
