Most Amtrak passengers don’t know these exist.

🇨🇦 Your Amtrak ticket can take you into Canada. Through a codeshare with Via Rail, cross-border routes like the Maple Leaf to Toronto are bookable directly through Amtrak — and your Guest Rewards points count.

📧 Companion discounts are real, but you won’t find them on the website. Amtrak sends targeted fare offers to Guest Rewards members that never go public. If you’re not in the program, you’re leaving money on the table.

👥 Traveling with 5 others? That’s all it takes to unlock Amtrak’s group desk — and with it, pricing and inventory that’s completely invisible to the general public.

10 Lesser-Known Facts About Amtrak’s Long-Distance Trains 🚂
Long-distance trains carry just 14% of Amtrak’s riders but account for 42% of all passenger miles traveled. They’re the backbone of the entire national rail network — and there’s a lot most people don’t know about them.
Four routes actually split mid-journey: the Empire Builder divides at Spokane into Seattle and Portland sections, the Lake Shore Limited splits at Albany into New York and Boston sections, and the Texas Eagle and Sunset Limited run combined between LA and San Antonio before parting ways. Most riders aren’t doing the full route either — the majority board or exit at intermediate stops.
Two routes don’t even run daily. The Cardinal and the Sunset Limited operate just three days a week. Some stations along these routes are only ever served in the middle of the night — that’s your window, like it or not.
The California Zephyr’s departure times are deliberately set so passengers pass through the Rockies, Colorado River canyon, and Sierra Nevada in daylight. That train also crests 9,270 feet inside Colorado’s Moffat Tunnel and passes through Donner Pass — yes, that Donner Pass.
Long-distance on-time performance has historically been poor, but there was one bright window after 2008 when new priority laws and reduced freight traffic briefly pushed the Texas Eagle from 22.4% to 96.7% on-time. It didn’t last.
And those padded schedules? Intentional — built in to protect on-time stats at major stations, not because the trains can’t go faster.

The California Zephyr | Chicago → San Francisco Bay | 2,438 miles
Amtrak’s most scenic long-distance train, the California Zephyr has been threading through the heart of the American West since 1983. From the flat plains of Illinois to the jagged Rockies, through the Colorado River canyon, across the Nevada desert, and up into the Sierra Nevada — this train doesn’t just take you somewhere, it shows you the country.
Hauling Superliner equipment, the CZ runs a ~51 hour journey with some of the most dramatic elevation changes of any passenger railroad on the continent. Power has evolved over the decades — from the classic F40PH to the workhorse P42DC Genesis, and now Siemens’ modern ALC-42 Charger joining the roster.

On May 1, 1971, the first Amtrak train rolled out of New York Penn Station bound for Philadelphia. Nobody expected it to last. The president of Burlington Northern famously predicted it wouldn’t survive five years.
54 years later, Amtrak just set an all-time ridership record with 34.5 million passengers.
The story of Amtrak is really the story of America’s complicated relationship with passenger rail — a country that built the greatest railroad network in the world, then spent decades trying to kill it, then kept bringing it back from the dead anyway.
It started with the “Rainbow Era” — a patchwork of inherited cars still wearing the liveries of a dozen defunct private railroads. No tracks, no stations, no rights-of-way. Just 184 routes, $40 million, and a name nobody had heard of yet.
The 1970s brought the Superliner. The 1980s brought Reagan-era budget axes. The 1990s nearly ended it entirely — by 1995 Amtrak was literally unable to pay its debts. Congress gave it one last lifeline and an ultimatum: break even by 2003 or shut down.
It didn’t break even. It also didn’t shut down.
Instead it launched the Acela in 2000, survived the pandemic, and in 2021 received more federal investment in a single bill than in its entire prior history. The Avelia Liberty — Amtrak’s new 160 mph flagship — entered service last August.
Love it or hate it, underfunded or not, delayed or on time — Amtrak is still here. And it’s carrying more Americans than ever.

Amtrak, officially the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, is the United States’ federally funded intercity passenger rail service. Founded in 1971 when Congress stepped in to save a dying passenger rail industry, Amtrak took over routes from private railroads that could no longer operate them profitably in the automobile and airline age.
Today Amtrak connects over 500 stations across 46 states, offering everything from short regional hops like the Northeast Corridor between Washington D.C. and Boston, to epic multi-day transcontinental journeys like the California Zephyr and the Sunset Limited. The railroad is partially funded by Congress each year and has operated without turning an overall profit for most of its existence, though its Northeast Corridor routes are consistently profitable.
Despite its challenges — aging equipment, freight railroad delays, and chronic underfunding compared to peer nations — Amtrak remains the backbone of American passenger rail and a lifeline for communities that have no viable air or bus alternatives. It carried roughly 28 million passengers annually before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted travel, and has been steadily recovering since.
With a major infusion of funding from the 2021 Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, Amtrak is currently undergoing its most significant expansion and modernization effort in decades, with new routes, new equipment, and upgraded stations on the horizon.

The Metroliner was America’s first real shot at high-speed rail, launched in 1969 between New York and Washington on the Northeast Corridor. Built by the Budd Company for the Pennsylvania Railroad, they were self-propelled electric railcars that hit 164 mph in testing but never came close to that in regular service — bad track, unreliable electronics, and constant mechanical headaches kept them reined in. Despite all of that, riders loved them. They sold out constantly, pulled passengers away from the airlines, and basically proved there was a massive market for fast, premium rail service in the corridor. The cars themselves were eventually pulled from service and replaced by locomotive-hauled trains that kept the Metroliner name, and the whole concept ultimately paved the way for the Acela. The original fleet of 61 cars lived messy, complicated lives — bouncing between corridors, getting rebuilt, renamed, stripped for parts, and converted into cab cars. The last Metroliner-branded service ran in 2006, but the program’s real legacy is that it convinced Congress and the public that intercity rail in the Northeast wasn’t dead.
