⛴️🪪PASSPORTS AND CRUISING TRAVEL TIPS

⛴️On a closed-loop cruise from the US, most cruise lines will allow US citizens to board with their birth certificate and a state-issued photo ID. It is important to note that some lines allow a photocopy of the birth certificate and some require a certified original or copy from the state with a raised seal. Also, if the birth certificate and photo ID names do not match, most cruise lines state that proof of name change is required (e.g. marriage certificates, divorce decrees). This does not apply as a blanket statement to all cruise lines or all sailings or citizens of other countries, so you should contact the cruise line directly for confirmation of the documents required if not using a valid US passport. In most cases, if you are allowed to board with these alternative documents, you will also be able to debark at all scheduled ports of call using the same documents.

⛴️BEST PRACTICE:
Passports with at least 6 months of validity from the end of travel are ALWAYS recommended for any international travel, including closed-loop cruises, even if you do not intend to debark at any ports of call. In the event of an emergency (personal or ship), if you are prequired to debark in a foreign country and return to the states by commercial air, a valid passport will be required and emergency embassy support will cause delays and can become costly.
