This trail kind of blew our minds. As many times as we’ve been to the main part of and the Kolob side, we’ve never been to the East side. It’s just far enough out of the way that it always gets moved down the priority list while there. We’ve been missing out!!!

It is our new favorite view in the park for sunset. People rave about Angels Landing for epic views but this trail literally looks DOWN on Angel’s Landing. You get ALL of the views! And if you have a fear of heights (me 😬) this is a far better option. It is one you want on your Zion itinerary next visit.

What you need to know:
📍Observation Point via East Mesa Trail
7 miles out and back
702 elevation gain
Rated Moderate.

The trail is very easy most of the way but then a little more challenging on the ascent/descent. 702 elevation gain over 7 miles is not bad at all though.

Tips:

🥾The trail is very well-maintained and offers amazing scenic views of the canyon below. It’s such a different landscape than most trails we’ve done in Zion which is so fun. The trail winds you through a beautiful forested area before your descent to the lookout.

🚙 You will have to drive on an unpaved road for a couple miles which can be a little bumpy on the final stretch. It is not maintained though so go at your own risk. The parking is limited and if you don’t get a spot, there is nowhere else to park so be aware of that. You will get towed. We got lucky and had no issues this time of year, even for sunset but it sounds like that’s not always the case.

🐕Dogs are NOT permitted on the trail.

🚽There are no restrooms at the trailhead. Pack in/Pack out.

💲No permit is required to hike this trail but you will need to pay the park entrance fee or free with your America the Beautiful pass.

📲 we had 5G T-Mobile service most of the trail which is always reassuring if there was ever an issue where it’s further out and less visited.

And there you have it. An underrated gem in Zion National Park. Are YOU adding it to your list? Or have you been already?

In honor of the Olympics beginning tonight, this felt fitting! No medals were won but check out the blue bird sky and golden sunshine! That’s good as gold in my book! It is so beautiful up the mountain right now. Get out there and enjoy some fresh air above the inversion before the weather moves in next week.

And if you happen to participate in the Olympics as well, please tag me. I want to see your event. Let’s start an Olympic trail version! You in? 🙌😂

📍Pine Hollow Trail
4.6 mile loop
1305 elevation gain
Rated Moderate on

Tip:
The trail is icy in some spots so spikes are a must. I had yak tracks and they weren’t quite cutting it a few times so if you have spikes, use them! Other than a little ice and some mud once the ground started to thaw, it was the perfect day!
