Christopher Columbus crossed the Atlantic in 1492 looking for a new route to Asia—and while history took a very different turn than he expected, his voyages became a major part of the story of European exploration and the Americas.

🇮🇹 GENOA, ITALY — Walk in Columbus' footsteps
Genoa is traditionally identified as Columbus' birthplace, and you can visit Columbus' House, located near the historic Porta Soprana gate. Explore the old city, see maritime history and enjoy Italian food while you're there.
Because if we're going to study history… I'm voting for doing it with pasta. 🍝😂
🇪🇸 PALOS DE LA FRONTERA & HUELVA, SPAIN — Where the voyage began
Visit the area in southwestern Spain connected to Columbus' 1492 expedition. You can explore La Rábida Monastery, associated with Columbus before the voyage, and see the Muelle de las Carabelas, where replicas of the Niña, Pinta and Santa María are displayed. ⛵
Now THAT is a history lesson I can get excited about!
🇪🇸 SEVILLE — Explore Spain's Age of Exploration
Visit the Archivo General de Indias, which preserves an enormous collection of documents connected to Spain's exploration and administration of its overseas territories.
Basically… a whole building dedicated to “Wait…so what happened next?” 😂📜

Visit the National Archives and explore America's complicated history of exploration, colonization and the people and cultures affected by it.
