To Travel Agent or Not To Travel Agent! That’s The Question!

Lately there've been a lot of news articles and social media posts about travel agent scams. Instead of highlighting some of the bad an negative stories, I wanted to share some positive suggestions on How to Find a Good and Reliable Travel Agent/Advisor. A trustworthy travel agent can make travel planning smooth and enjoyable. Here are some suggestions on how you might find the right one for you. Understand that no one is perfect and anyone at anytime can change or shift, but here are some things to think about when choosing a travel advisor/agent.

1. Define Your Needs
Consider your travel goals, budget, and preferences. Are you after family vacations, solo trips, or something specialized? Knowing what you want helps narrow your search and saves you and your potential agent time.

2. Get Recommendations & Read Reviews
Ask friends, family, or colleagues for referrals. Check online reviews on platforms like Google, Yelp, and TripAdvisor to see which agents are praised for reliability and service.

3. Check Credentials
Look for agents with memberships or certifications from reputable organizations, such as ASTA, ACTA, or IATA. Please note that there are hundreds of certifications, licenses and travel agent courses that an agent can receive or complete to be “legit”. So do your due diligence.

4. Trust Your Instincts
Choose someone you feel comfortable with and who understands your vision.

5. Communicate, Communicate, Communicate:
One of the most important things that you can do as a consumer (someone spending money on a service), is to stay in constant communication with your agent. You should NOT be made to feel like you are asking too many questions. Even if your trip is many months away, its ok for you to ask for confirmations in writing from the vendors/locations and even contact the destinations yourself (if you feel the need) to check your reservation. Don’t wait until right before your trip to start looking into things.
