Down in southwest Oklahoma this hidden gem was a getaway for celebrities, outlaws, musicians, and politicians in the 1920’s. After decades of declining population, there has been a bit of a revitalization in recent years. Situated in the Wichita Mountains next to Lawtonka Lake, it’s also a great area for hiking and biking. I really enjoyed visiting Medicine Park!

I was in Oregon back in April and while there I stopped by the Air and Space Museum at the Eugene Airport. Interesting place! Besides several historic aircraft they have an amazing model plane collection. Definitely worth checking out if you ever fly into the Eugene!

I was interviewed by Jason Spiess for the Route 66 Americana substack and website. Jason is about to document the entire route county-by-county and we had a fun discussion about all sorts of things! This looks like an interesting page to follow as it has multiple people contributing articles and videos about the Mother Road. Here is the article he wrote about me with the video: https://route66americanaarchive.substack.com/p/thats-a-shocker-john-wise-and-the

Today’s video was certainly an adventure. The beginning was full of rain so I had to come back a different day to finish, and then when I got towards the end I had an unexpected event occur. Then I drove back to Wichita in a lightning storm. But in between I saw some amazing little communities from small towns to unincorporated places to ghost towns. Awesome day(s) of exploring!

I visited the Cowley Counts KS Historical Museum today and saw this fascinating map. It’s shows the locations of all of the old rural schools in the county. In the 1800’s there needed to be a lot of schools because to get there you had to walk or ride your horse! So may counties could have similar maps. I’d also love to see a map of how many of these schools are still standing!

I was down in Texas last week and stopped by this small town for a quick visit. It appears the downtown might not be quite what it used to be, but it has some interesting history and unique places to check out!

Thanks to PBS Kansas and Victor Hogstrom for inviting me to be a guest on an upcoming episode of “One on one”. They said it will be broadcast in about a month or so and then available online. It was fun to chat with Vic for the show!

Photos from the past week. I know this is my travel page but the first photo represents a long year of coaching and winning the American Conference Championship was a significant accomplishment for our team!
