On May 22, 1902, Crater Lake National Park was established—becoming Oregon’s only national park and one of the most awe-inspiring natural wonders in the United States. Formed by the collapse of Mount Mazama over 7,000 years ago, the lake’s deep blue waters and sheer cliffs create one of the most breathtaking sights in the country.

When visiting Crater Lake National Park, take time to drive the Rim Drive for incredible panoramic views, hike down the Cleetwood Cove Trail to reach the water’s edge, or take a boat tour to Wizard Island, a cinder cone rising from the lake’s depths. Every view of Crater Lake feels like seeing nature at its purest.

Much of the Modoc War was fought in Oregon. The men mentioned here were executed at Klamath Falls. Lava Beds NM is just over the southern border in northern California.

The Modoc War occurred in the area that would become Lava Beds National Monument from July 1872 through the late spring of 1873.
