I am sad to be listing my long-time project boat, Barnswallow, a 1934 40' sloop designed by Starling Burgess. This beautiful and historic boat has a lot of stories to tell. There's some work to be done to make her sparkle, but most of the heavy duty restoration has been completed (new keel, deadwood, floor timbers, most planking, etc) and wouldn't take an intense effort to get her floating again. I'm offering up all the documentation, building materials, supplies, tender, and even the shed for sale if the new owner is interested! Starting a new business along with a busier family life has meant I don't have the time to do this project justice anymore, which has been a hard conclusion for me to come to.

I have been using bald cypress for all the new planks and still have quite a pile that could go with Barnswallow for a little extra. Along with that is some white oak, black locust, and hackmatack.

I bought the boat in 2015 and have since spent a lot of time moving her to a new shed, cleaning inside and out, replacing many planks on the starboard side, and collecting parts and information. Structurally she's very well on her way to being in good shape. The previous owner and Billings Diesel and Marine replaced all the dead wood, keel, keel bolts, many floor timbers, garboard planks, refastened below the water line, etc. I have replaced many of the remaining wood that needed fixing above the waterline. The port side wasn't as bad, but there's still a couple soft spots. The deck, cockpit, and interior still needs work for a fully finished look. The mast and boom are aluminum and in good order, the sails are tired and need replacing. The current engine is a fresh rebuilt Volvo 2 cyl, I haven't played with it at all, but it hasn't really been used yet. The details on this boat are beautiful, from the curved bulkheads to the deck prisms and custom bronze castings. In the right hands this could be a beautiful boat again.

Barnswallow was featured in two issues of Yachting magazine and Uffa Fox's Second Book, along with other publications. These copies would go with the boat. In her time the Barnswallow was a cutting edge cruiser.

Barnswallow comes with an extensive set of restoration records from previous owners (work performed at Billings Diesel and Marine), past marine surveys (one made in 1985 and a subsequent one in 1997 after much of the heavy carpentry was complete), and letters between the original owner and subsequent owners. This boat has a lot of history.
