According to headlines from this weekend, Jordie Barrett has been praised by All Blacks head coach Dave Rennie and captain Codie Taylor for another influential performance in New Zealand’s 50-19 victory over Australia at Eden Park. Colin Newboult reports that the 29-year-old played a central role in retaining the Bledisloe Cup, particularly through his defensive work and physicality at inside centre.

Rennie said Barrett had lifted his game significantly this year after also impressing in South Africa. Newboult quotes him saying: “He’s been phenomenal all year. He was outstanding in South Africa, I just think he’s taken his game to another level.”

Taylor praised Barrett’s physical contribution, saying that his style would not look out of place among the forwards. Newboult cites Taylor describing Barrett’s actions as “world-class” and adding that he had earned the right to be regarded among the best inside centres in the world. Barrett’s presence also supported Damian McKenzie, who started at fly-half after injuries to Richie Mo’unga and Ruben Love.

It's no real surprise that South Africa now produces only about 39% of the fuel that it consumes domestically, down from 78% in 2019, leaving the country dependent on imports for roughly 61% of refined products - Caitlyn Hilliard-Lomas points out that it is refinery closure, ageing infrastructure, flood and fire damage, high operating costs and gas shortages that have sharply reduced local capacity.

Sasol remains central to domestic supply through its coal-to-liquids operations, while Natref and Astron continue refining imported crude oil and PetroSA’s gas-to-liquids facility remains idle because of feedstock shortages. Hilliard-Lomas cites military and security analyst Joan Swart saying that Sasol supplies about a quarter of local fuel demand and provides some insulation from fluctuations in imported crude oil costs.

The shutdown of the SAPREF and ENREF refineries removed substantial capacity from the market, with SAPREF now the focus of a proposed R117 billion redevelopment. Hilliard-Lomas quotes Swart warning that rebuilding large-scale refining capacity could take “five to probably ten years”, given South Africa’s record of delays in major infrastructure projects. Mineral and Petroleum Resources Minister Gwede Mantashe has also warned that reduced refining capacity increases exposure to geopolitical disruption.
