Elephants are a keystone species, meaning the entire ecosystem around them depends on their presence. They break branches, disperse seeds, and create water access points that countless other species rely on. Lose the elephant, and you lose far more than one animal.

HERD, South Africaโ€™s first dedicated elephant orphanage, exists to make sure that doesnโ€™t happen. Founded by Adine Roode in 2019, every calf that arrives has a name, a story, and a surrogate family waiting for them. Khanyisa, their beloved albino calf rescued from a snare, has touched our teamโ€™s hearts and those of people around the world, and sheโ€™s just one of many.
