Welcome to Hidden history of Zimbabwe — On 3 September 1978, Air Rhodesia Flight 825 Hunyani, Viscount, shot down near Kariba by ZIPRA Strela missile. 38 on board killed, 10 of 18 survivors shot dead on ground. Second Viscount 12 Feb 1979 all 59 killed. Operation Gatling followed. Same date 3 Sep 1980, Zimbabwe severs diplomatic ties with apartheid SA, keeps only trade mission in Johannesburg. MITUPO — Why your totem is more than a name 🐘🦁

In our society, before surnames, we had Mitupo. 25+ totems — Moyo, Shava, Soko, Hungwe, Beta, Ngwena, Shumba...

If you are Moyo (Heart), you never eat heart. If you are Shava (Eland), you never hunt eland. That's conservation — chivanhu taught us not to destroy our own.

You never marry same totem — because same totem is your brother, your sister. Even if you meet in London, if you are both Moyo, you are siblings.

Your totem praise — chidau — tells your history: Moyo Chirandu, Shava Mutenhesanwa, Soko Murehwa...

KUROVA GUVA — BRINGING THE SPIRIT HOME.
In our society, when someone dies, we don't say they are gone. We say washaika — they are lost, not dead. For one year they wander as mushikabvu.
After one year, the family holds Kurova Guva — the night we bring them home. Whole village gathers. Fire in the centre. Seven-day beer doro remvura. Mbira plays from sunset to sunrise — no sleeping.
Elders call: "Tatigara zvakanaka here? Come protect your children!" The svikiro dances, voice changes — mudzimu has arrived. From that night, the dead becomes guardian.
No Kurova Guva, no protection. That's why we say musha haugare pasina mudzimu — a home cannot stand without ancestors.

In chivanhu, sadza is more than maize meal. It's a classroom.
One pot. One big wooden spoon — mugoti. Many hands. Children sit around, elders eat first, you wait your turn. You don't take the big piece of meat — you give it to sekuru. You eat from the same plate — you learn sharing.
That's why we say in Shona: "Kana usina sadza, hauna kudya" — If you haven't eaten sadza, you haven't eaten. And "Usadya wega" — don't eat alone.
Sadza is made from white maize — chibage — introduced in the 1900s, but it became our identity. Before that it was rapoko and millet — zviyo, mhunga, mapfunde. Today sadza ne muriwo, sadza ne nyama, sadza ne matemba — that's Zimbabwe on a plate.
If you refuse sadza at your in-laws, you refuse the family. If you stir sadza badly and it has lumps — magwere — everyone will laugh.

1898 — They hanged her. But her last words broke the rope. 💔🇿🇼

Mbuya Nehanda before the noose: "Mapfupa angu achamuka" — My bones shall rise.

26 years later, 1920s — her bones DID rise. Second Chimurenga began. Then 1966 war. Then 1980 — independence.

They killed the woman, but not the spirit. Her statue now stands in Harare, looking over her valley in Mazowe.
