🇿🇦 HAPPY HERITAGE DAY, SOUTH AFRICA 🇿🇦🇮🇳
Today, I celebrate a part of who I am, my Indian heritage, my roots, and the generations that came before me.
As a South African Indian, I am deeply proud of where my ancestors came from and of the extraordinary contribution Indian people have made to the world.
From the spices, traditions, languages, food and knowledge that travelled across continents, to a civilisation with thousands of years of history, India has contributed immensely to human civilisation. Today, people of Indian heritage can be found across the world, from entrepreneurs and academics to professionals, innovators and leaders, including countless CEOs and executives of major global corporations.
But heritage is about far more than achievements.
It is about people!!!
Our ancestors left India and travelled thousands of kilometres to South Africa, many arriving under extremely difficult and exploitative conditions to work the land and build lives in an unfamiliar country. They endured hardship, discrimination, separation from loved ones and uncertainty, yet they persevered.
They planted roots.
They built families.
They worked.
They sacrificed.
And they gave the generations that followed an opportunity to build something greater.
We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us.
Their resilience lives within us,in our work ethic, our determination, our family values, our respect for education, our entrepreneurial spirit, our food, our music, our languages, our traditions and the way we remain connected to one another.
I may live in a modern South Africa, and my life may look very different from that of my ancestors, but my roots remain deeply embedded within me.
I am proud to be South African.
And I am proud to be Indian.
These are not competing identities. They are both chapters of the story that made me who I am.
Today, I remember those who came before us with gratitude and respect. Their journey was not easy, but their courage helped shape the generations that followed.
May we honour their sacrifices by building lives and communities worthy of them.
Happy Heritage Day to all South Africans.
Proud of my heritage. Proud of my roots. Proud to call South Africa home.
