When does bonded warehousing actually make sense?

Bonded warehousing is useful for a specific reason: goods have already been admitted into bond and still need to remain under customs control before entering free circulation.

The Customs release for bonded entry comes first. Once the goods are in bond, duty or VAT, release requirements, receiving readiness and onward movement can influence how long they remain there.

Imported stock can tie up cash before it ever reaches your local warehouse.

Bonded warehousing becomes relevant once the required Customs release for bonded entry has been obtained and the goods have been admitted into bond.
From that point, duty timing, stock demand, release-from-bond requirements and warehouse availability can influence when the goods should enter local circulation.
The value is not simply extra storage space.
It is giving import, finance and operations teams a controlled environment in which imported stock can remain under customs control while its next stage is planned.

Cargo has arrived. What still has to happen before it can be released?

Many importers expect arrival to mean the cargo is available. In practice, several steps may still sit between those two points.

If goods are intended for bonded warehousing, they may need to remain at the port, airport, terminal or another controlled location until the Customs release for bonded entry is issued. Only then can they move into bond.

Imported stock has arrived. What has to happen before bonded storage?

"Imported goods can arrive before the business is ready to release them into local circulation. But if bonded warehousing is required, the goods cannot simply move from arrival into the bonded warehouse.
The required Customs release for bonded entry must first be obtained.
Once the goods have been admitted into bond, they can remain under customs control while applicable duty or VAT, release requirements, stock timing and onward movement are managed.

Importing stock you won't sell straight away?

A licensed bonded warehouse lets you defer import duty and VAT until the goods leave. Goods re-exported from bond don't attract South African duty or VAT at all.

Two things importers often miss:
- Duty is charged at the rate on the day goods are released, not the day they arrived.
- Goods can stay in bond for up to two years, but an extension must be requested at least 30 days before that runs out.

Ready to move cargo? Start by giving BAC the shipment requirement.

By this point, the freight decision should move from general comparison to the actual shipment.

Tell BAC what is moving, how much cargo there is, where it is moving from and to, when it needs to arrive and what customs, handling or delivery requirements are already known.

From there, the team can assess whether air freight, sea freight, FCL or LCL is the more practical fit and what supporting customs, storage or transport coordination may be required.

The goal is not to choose a mode first. It is to plan the movement around the cargo.

FCL or LCL? Container space is only part of the decision. 🚢

FCL uses a container allocated to one shipper’s cargo and may suit larger, regular or higher-control shipments.

LCL combines smaller consignments from multiple shippers in shared container space and may suit cargo that does not justify a full container.

But the right option should also consider cargo volume, handling requirements, timing, customs readiness, storage and what happens after arrival.
