The Murad Khane district is located in the heart of Kabul, replete with history and heritage. Its pale mud housing alongside Kabul River is reminiscent of a culture that thrived through these very streets. Today, it’s one of the poorest districts in the capital.

Just across the road from the sky-high Soviet-era buildings lay an 18th-century quarter that hides a bustling market, narrow streets, and alleys full of vegetable and fruit sellers. Rising above the din of the noisy street, one can hear the tinkering sound of metal and the soft humming of caged songbirds.

The most popular attraction in Sri Lanka, Sigiriya Rock is widely considered the 8th wonder of the world. The rock plateau, which soars 660 feet in the air, was formed from the magma of an extinct volcano. Atop the rock is an ancient palace that was formerly used as a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century. It exists today as one of the best-preserved examples of ancient urban planning, engineering (there’s a complex hydraulic system with dams, bridges, canals, and fountains), and horticulture (it boasts the oldest landscaped gardens in the world). In 1982, it was officially designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Protip: For the best views, head to the adjacent Pidurangala Rock, which is slightly lower than Sigiriya.
