Light Cutout #
A street light cutout is a protective device installed inside the street-lighting feeder/pole connection. Its main purpose is to isolate and protect the individual street light from faults such as short circuits or overloads.

Termination of Street Light Cutout

1. Isolate the supply and verify absence of voltage.
2. Bring the incoming feeder cable into the cutout enclosure.
3. Terminate the Live (L), Neutral (N), and Earth (PE) conductors on their designated terminals.
4. Connect the outgoing cable from the cutout to the street-light luminaire.
5. Install the specified fuse/MCB in the cutout for protection.
6. Ensure all cable glands are properly tightened and provide proper IP/weather protection.
7. Check cable lugs, torque, insulation, and earth continuity.
8. Close the cutout securely and carry out testing before energizing # # #

Typical work sequence

1. Isolate and make the OHL safe.
2. Dismantle/remove overhead conductors, insulators, and accessories.
3. Excavate the approved underground cable route.
4. Install ducts/trench, sand bedding, warning tape/tiles, and marker posts as per approved specifications.
5. Pull/install the underground MV/HV cable.
6. Install cable joints and terminations.
7. Connect the UGC to the existing network at the transition points.
8. Perform required tests, such as VLF/withstand, insulation resistance, sheath test, phasing and continuity.
9. Backfill and reinstate the area.
10. Energize after testing, inspection, and approval # # #

(Time Domain Reflectometer) is an instrument used to locate faults, breaks, joints, and abnormal conditions in cables by sending a signal into the cable and measuring the reflected signal.

In electrical cable work, TDR can help find:

* Open circuit / cable break
* Short circuit
* Cable fault location
* Incorrect or damaged joints
* Approximate cable length
* Impedance changes or discontinuities

How it works

1. TDR sends a fast electrical pulse into the cable.
2. The pulse travels along the cable.
3. When it encounters a change—such as a break, short, or impedance change—it reflects back.
4. The TDR measures the time taken for the reflection.
5. It calculates the approximate distance to the fault.

Example: If TDR shows a reflection at 185 m, the abnormality is approximately 185 meters from the test point.

For 11 kV/33 kV cables, TDR is commonly used as part of cable fault location, often together with other equipment such as a thumper and cable fault locator # #
